Abstract: A historical overview of the Catholic Church's attitudes towards antisemitism from 1840 to the present, emphasizing instances in which clergymen, including Cardinals and Popes, condemned antisemitism. Mentions the Damascus blood libel, the Mortara Affair, the Dreyfus Affair, the Action Française, and the Holocaust. Points to the need for an in-depth analysis of the Shoah from a theological perspective. Concludes that one can speak of Christian roots of modern antisemitism in the historical sense, but not in the theological, as antisemitism is not a basic element of Christianity. Asserts that "the Church's attitude to modern antisemitism was - with some exceptions - of condemnation, both before and after the Shoah".
