Abstract:
Surveys the organizations and governmental bodies whose documents concerning Jews during the Nazi period are preserved in the archives, giving examples of the type of content to be found in each. Nazi party records document early agitation and violence against Jews; Gestapo files contain denunciations against Jews and those who refused to break off relations with them, or who made remarks against the regime and its antisemitic policy; court records show the handling of such denunciations. Details the case of Pastor Behrens of Stade, who was denounced in 1935 for his open condemnation of the persecution of the Jews and the obscenities of "Der Stürmer". He was seized and manhandled by the SA, but eventually the courts cleared him and imposed prison terms on his attackers, showing that it was still possible to take a courageous stand.
