Abstract:
Analyzes whether a German-Jewish culture existed in the past. Claims that although Jews lived in Germany for more than 1,500 years, there was no possibility of symbiosis because of traditional Christian anti-Jewish attitudes - e.g. the Jews were accused of deicide, host desecration, blood libels, well-poisoning, etc. Mentions, among others, Luther's and Fichte's dislike for the Jews. After their political emancipation in the 19th century, the Jews hoped for full cultural integration but the Germans did not reciprocate. Nevertheless, before the Nazi takeover an important part of German Jews identified with German culture and conceived of the two cultures, German and Jewish, as comprising one entity.
