Abstract:
Presents the results of a sociological survey held among 1,000 Jews in Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Rostov on Don, and Khabarovsk in 1995, as well as partial results of surveys conducted among non-Jews in 1994-95 regarding their attitudes toward Jews. Concludes that the Russians hold many stereotypes of Jews; intolerance of Jews has increased from 1989; there are objections to marriage with Jews among Russians; many Russians believe that Jews are harmful to Russia, that there is a Zionist plot against Russia, etc. Many Jewish respondents feel that attitudes toward Jews have worsened over the past decade; they regard antisemitic organizations as very dangerous. 57% of Jewish respondents have experienced antisemitism. Discusses the factors associated with the perception of a high level of antisemitism.
