Abstract:
In 1910 a literary scandal broke out in Romania surrounding a young journalist named Eugen Porn, who wrote for the weekly "Nouă Revista Română", which was published by C. Rădulescu-Motru. Porn, a Jew, had expressed critical views on Romanian literary habits; at the same time, his application for naturalization was under discussion by the Romanian Senate. Porn's critical views generated a wave of protests in the nationalist press and from a large group of members of the Society of Romanian Writers. The protesters described him as a "fraudulent intruder" in the field of Romanian literature, and called for his removal from the Romanian literary scene and for the state's rejection of his naturalization. The "Nouă Revista Română", especially through the voice of Rădulescu-Motru, constantly defended Porn, and exposed the antisemitism of his detractors. Two camps emerged, for and against Porn - these are the subject of the present study. The pro-Porn camp eventually won.
