Abstract:
As in all the German-occupied countries, in Ukraine the Nazis inducted thousands of local inhabitants and former POWs into their police formations. These formations became a tool in the Final Solution. Many policemen killed Jews on their own initiative; some of them expressed a measure of sadism. Examines the motivation of those who agreed to serve in the pro-Nazi police, and the motives of the local policemen who perpetrated the genocide. Based on examination of the personal files of 82 Ukrainian policemen from the area of Kiev compiled during the Soviet postwar trials of former collaborators, concludes that most of them were not ideologically motivated; they were either "vigorous conformists" or "ordinary executors". It was their growing involvement with mass murder that corrupted them morally and made them cold-blooded killers and sadists. Despite its "auxiliary" status, the Ukrainian police played a key role in the Holocaust in Ukraine.
