Abstract:
The foundation of the ghetto in Venice was the expression of a turning point in the collective attitude towards Jews in Europe after the expulsion from Spain. Venice, proud of its image as the city of God, knew a wave of wars, plagues, and disasters between 1480-1509 which caused deep religious anxiety and resulted in a wave of penitence, violent preaching against all sinful things, and calls for the conversion of the Jews. Although the authorities tried to defend the Jews for economic reasons, they had to give in to pressures (e.g. by preachers and the Monte di pieta) and establish the ghetto at Cannaregio in 1516, institutionalizing the segregation of the Jews.
