Kurzfassung:
This essay succinctly surveys the foci of the contributions of three major scholars active in the last years of their lives in USA, to the study of Jewish mysticism. The claim is that the more “excessive” aspects of this field, the magical and the erotic, and to a great extent also the ecstatic elements, were downplayed, as were the messianic trends. Though shaped intellectually by the same academic center of Berlin, as was Gershom Scholem, the Rabbinic background of Schechter, Heschel and Altmann, and the American intellectual scene where they flourished, were instrumental in a different type of portrayal of Jewish mysticism, unlike the more transgressive and eschatological emphases of Scholem’s scholarship in the field.
