Abstract:
Focuses on the Nation of Islam as a religious movement rather than on its political aspects. Notes how both leaders of the group, Elijah Muhammad, the NOI's long-time leader and prophet, and Louis Farrakhan, its current leader, not only demonize Jews but also find things to praise among them, and encourage their followers to emulate Jews in certain respects. Suggests that both leaders hold Jews to a higher spiritual standard than other Whites. This has led both to higher expectations from the Jews and greater disappointment with them. Farrakhan's attitude has ranged from a desire to emulate to a desire to displace the Jews. The Nation of Islam combines a degree of religious identification with Judaism with antisemitic stereotypes of Jewish economic conspiracies, thus creating a highly ambiguous relationship.
