Abstract:
Discusses a type of Holocaust revisionism that is not outright denial but rather a minimization of the Holocaust. Focuses on political aspects of Holocaust memory in Germany, noting the reluctance to construct a Holocaust memorial in Berlin. Holocaust historiography, in general, is subject to distortion via de-emphasis of Nazi atrocities, substitution of terms like "slave labor" with euphemisms, and denigration of Jewish sources. Special problems exist in Germany, e.g. the continuing concern of historians with the Nazi past, cover-ups of colleagues' roles (e.g. physicians), and social and legal pressures against investigating certain topics. A particular problem is that of funding research on the Nazi period; this sometimes involves Jewish scholars and/or Israeli institutions, and leads to conflicts of interest that may undermine objective research.
