Abstract:
Examines how it was that 75% of the Jewish population in France managed to survive the war. Contends that rescue activities played a crucial role, mainly conducted by Christian organizations, both Catholic and Protestant, and by the Resistance, as well as wide support for Jews by the non-Jewish population, and lack of cooperation of Vichy authorities at the stage of the deportations. The Churches, albeit antisemitic, as well as most French citizens (who had no interest in the "Jewish question"), never supported Nazi racism, and were stunned by the forms of anti-Jewish persecution. The disintegration of Vichy authority in 1943-44, and the Germans' preoccupation with the exigencies of war, facilitated the assistance rendered to Jews.
