Abstract:
In 1945-47 British diplomats in Poland, Romania, and Hungary were sending reports to London on the condition of Jews in these countries and on their desire to emigrate. They mention popular antisemitism, manifested in the murder of Jews during this period, as one of the main factors instigating Jewish emigration. The governments of these countries granted emigration permits to Jews, while restricting the emigration of non-Jews. London was hesitant to pressure Poland, Romania, and Hungary to take measures against antisemitism: on the one hand, antisemitism in these countries intensified illegal Jewish emigration to Palestine; on the other hand, antisemitism was widely shared by the anti-communist opposition in these countries.
