Abstract:
Traces the Jewish presence in the Republic of Genoa between 1600-1750, mentioning the attitude of the Church, the civil authorities, and the population toward the Jews. States that Genoa was generally tolerant and pragmatic, allowing and sometimes encouraging the settlement of Jews, especially for the purpose of commerce. Due to Catholic prejudices, this tolerance decreased after 1710 and, after a failed attempt to establish a ghetto, the authorities voted, in 1737, for the expulsion of the Jews. However, this decision was not fully executed.
