Abstract:
Contends that Bialik's poem on the Kishinev pogrom (1903), which blames the Jews for not defending themselves, influenced Israeli reactions to the Holocaust through its negation of the "diaspora mentality". Notes that, although the poem is viewed as reflecting historical events, it does not totally coincide with the testimonies of witnesses and victims that Bialik himself recorded at the time. The fact that it is not historically accurate, because it was written to make a point, should be emphasized when the poem is taught in Israeli schools.
