Abstract:
Relates the case of Israele (Eugenio) Zolli, who was Chief Rabbi of Rome from December 1939-January 1945, and converted to Catholicism in February 1945. Describes Zolli's personality and the bitter conflicts with his congregants. Discusses, particularly, accusations that the Polish-born rabbi did nothing to help his people during the Nazi invasion of Italy. Relates the history of the 1943 Nazi extortion of Jewish gold, and Zolli's approach to the Vatican for a loan. Emphasizes that the Jews themselves filled the gold quota and cancelled their request to the Vatican, although the Vatican is often credited, to this day, as having donated gold to save the Jews. On 16 October 1943 Rome's Jews were deported - 1,041 of them never returned - and the Vatican was silent. Zolli became a teacher at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and died in 1956.
