    Abstract: "This volume presents the culmination of research on an almost ignored literary corpus: the translations into literary Italian of classical Hebrew texts made by Jews between 1550 and 1650. It includes dozens of poetical and philosophical texts and wisdom literature as well as dictionaries and biblical translations produced in what their authors viewed as a national tongue, common to Christians and Jews. In so doing, the authors/translators explicitly left behind the so-called Judeo-Italian. These texts, many of them being published for the first time, are studied in the context of intellectual and literary history.     Abstract: "In Émigré Voices Lewkowicz and Grenville present twelve oral history interviews with men and women who came to Britain as Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria in the late 1930s. Many of the interviewees rose to great prominence in their chosen career, such as the author and illustrator Judith Kerr, the actor Andrew Sachs, the photographer and cameraman Wolf Suschitzky, the violinist Norbert Brainin, and the publisher Elly Miller. The narratives of the interviewees tell of their common struggles as child or young adult refugees who had to forge new lives in a foreign country and they illuminate how each interviewee dealt with the challenges of forced emigration and the Holocaust. The voices of the twelve interviewees provide the reader with a unique and original source, which gives direct access to the lived multifaceted experience of the interviewees and their contributions to British culture"--

Included is a section on Christian-Hebraism with articles on Altdorf where polemical books were published and another on William Wotten, a Christian vicar who published the first English translation of Mishnayot.     Abstract: In Strategies of Persuasion in Herodotus’ Histories and Genesis–Kings , Eva Tyrell comparatively analyzes narrative means in two monumental ancient texts about the past. Combining a narratological approach with insights of modern historical theory and biblical scholarship, she investigates patterns of narrative persuasion as a trans-cultural phenomenon and their connection with ancient concepts of reality and truth. The study contrasts differences in fundamental narrative structures of both narratives, such as mediacy and discursive versus diegetic text portions.     Abstract: In Greek Writers and Philosophers in Philo and Josephus Erkki Koskenniemi investigates how two Jewish writers, Philo and Josephus, quoted, mentioned and referred to Greek writers and philosophers. He asks what this tells us about their Greek education, their contacts with Classical culture in general, and about the societies in which Philo and Josephus lived. Although Philo in Alexandria and Josephus in Jerusalem both had the possibility to acquire a thorough knowledge of Greek language and culture, they show very different attitudes. Philo, who was probably admitted to the gymnasium, often and enthusiastically refers to Greek poets and philosophers. Josephus on the other hand rarely quotes from their works, giving evidence of a more traditionalistic tendencies among Jewish nobility in Jerusalem

    Abstract: Jews and Christians under the Roman Empire shared a unique sense of community. Set apart from their civic and cultic surroundings, both groups resisted complete assimilation into the dominant political and social structures. However, Jewish communities differed from their Christian counterparts in their overall patterns of response to the surrounding challenges. They exhibit diverse levels of integration into the civic fabric of the cities of the Empire and display contrary attitudes towards the creation of trans-local communal networks. The variety of local case studies examined in this volume offers an integrated image of the multiple factors, both internal and external, which determined the role of communal identity in creating a sense of belonging among Jews and Christians under Imperial constraints

Teil zeigt mit kurzen, griffigen Erläuterungen die sehr eindrucksvollen (manchmal allerdings unzureichend reproduzierten) Foto- und anderen Dokumente der Ausstellung, die Zwangsarbeit als ein Massenphänomen deutlich macht, das während des 2. Weltkriegs fast ganz Europa umfasste. Der 2. Teil enthält 7 kürzere, verständlich geschriebene wissenschaftliche Aufsätze, die z.T., dabei ebenfalls Deutschland und Europa ins Visier nehmend, einen allgemeinen Überblick verschaffen, z.T. auch speziellere Bereiche wie etwa Zwangsarbeit im Bergbau aufarbeiten.     Abstract: Im Mai 2001 wird in Münster die Ausstellung Im Auftrag: Polizei, Verwaltung und Verantwortung im 20. Jahrhundert eröffnet. Am Beispiel des Rheinlandes und Westfalens wird die Geschichte der Ordnungspolizei in Rheinland und Westfalen mit ihrer Vorgeschichte in der Weimarer Republik und ihrer weittragenden bundesrepublikanischen Nachgeschichte in der Dauerpräsentation didaktisch innovativ präsentiert. In der Bundesrepublik gibt es kein vergleichbares Projekt, in der ordnungspolizeiliches Handeln und seine Nachwirkungen auf die polizeiliche Entwicklung nach 1945 erforscht, museal dargeboten und pädagogisch vermittelt werden. Der Katalog zur Ausstellung greift mit seinen 15 Beiträgen Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten im polizeilichen Selbstverständnis auf; thematisiert die Genese des neuen Leitbildes Freund und Helfer sowie die neuen Funktionen der grünen Polizei im braunen Staat. Der Einsatz der Polizei im besetzten Europa und ihre Beteiligung am "arbeitsteilig" umgesetzten Holocaust werden ebenso behandelt wie die innerpolizeilichen Versuche der Verdrängung der eigenen Verstrickung, wie auch der wenigen Versuche der von polizeilicher Seite betriebenen Aufklärung in der Bundesrepublik der 50er und 60er Jahre.
