Abstract:
Moses (1868-1942) was a physician, well-known for his championship of social medicine, and as a speaker, writer, and member of the Reichstag for the Social Democrats. He was also concerned all his life with the "Jewish question". Between 1902-10 he founded, published, and edited the "General-Anzeiger für die gesamten Interessen des Judentums", which dealt with every aspect of Jewish life and culture, but especially with the demand that Jews be accepted as equal citizens without having to give up their Jewishness. In 1907 he also published "Die Lösung der Judenfrage: Eine Rundfrage", a compilation of the replies of prominent Germans whose views he had solicited. Politically, he was first a Liberal, but became disillusioned with the Liberals' antisemitism and concluded that only the Social Democrats offered a solution to the "Jewish question". In 1910 he joined the party and gave up the editing of the "General-Anzeiger" in favor of political activity. The Nazis deported him in 1942 to Theresienstadt, where he died soon after.
