    Abstract: Die Niederlande waren für deutsche Juden während des Nationalsozialismus ein Land der Hoffnung, eines neuen Alltags, der enttäuschten Erwartungen und der erneuten VerfolgungDie antisemitische Politik des "Dritten Reiches" veranlasste in den 1930er-Jahren Hundertausende Juden zur Flucht aus Deutschland. Zu den ersten Exilländern gehörten die benachbarten Niederlande, wo die meisten jedoch nur eine Zuflucht auf Zeit fanden. Der Aufbau einer neuen Existenz gestaltete sich oftmals schwierig. Viele zogen weiter. Diejenigen aber, die diesen Schritt nicht gehen konnten oder wollten, waren nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht im Mai 1940 erneut der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung ausgeliefert. Tausende wurden in den folgenden Jahren deportiert und ermordet.Christine Kausch nimmt das Leben der jüdischen Flüchtlinge in den Jahren 1933 bis 1945 in den Blick und analysiert auf Basis hunderter Egodokumente sowie zahlreicher weiterer Quellen die individuellen und kollektiven Erfahrungen der Geflüchteten. Die Autorin untersucht, wie die Menschen im Nachbarland aufgenommen wurden, wie sie die erneute Verfolgung erlebten und wie sie auf die jeweiligen Umstände reagierten. Die Studie bietet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur jüdischen, niederländischen und deutschen Geschichte

    Abstract: "Facing the harrowing task of rebuilding a life in the wake of the Holocaust, many Jewish survivors, community and religious leaders, and Allied soldiers viewed marriage between Jewish women and military personnel as a way to move forward after unspeakable loss. Proponents believed that these unions were more than just a ticket out of war-torn Europe: they would help the Jewish people repopulate after the attempted annihilation of European Jewry. Historian Robin Judd, whose grandmother survived the Holocaust and married an American soldier after liberation, introduces us to the Jewish women who lived through genocide and went on to wed American, Canadian, and British military personnel after the war. She offers an intimate portrait of how these unions emerged and developed-from meeting and courtship to marriage and immigration to life in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom-and shows how they helped shape the postwar world by touching thousands of lives, including those of the chaplains who officiated their weddings, the Allied authorities whose policy decisions structured the couples' fates, and the bureaucrats involved in immigration and acculturation. Vor allem sind sie aber auch eines: große Literatur. Mit dieser Ausgabe liegen erstmals in deutscher Sprache Etty Hillesums sämtliche Schriften vor. Zehn Monate nach Beginn der deutschen Besatzung der Niederlande begann die siebenundzwanzigjährige Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) unter dem Eindruck einer Psychotherapie, ein Tagebuch zu schreiben. Sie wollte Ordnung in ihr Leben bringen, den Dingen auf den Grund gehen, Gott finden, aber auch Zeugin des Schicksals ihres Volkes werden. Inmitten des Schreckens berichtet sie von der Suche nach Einfachheit und Achtsamkeit und schließlich nach Licht in der "Hölle auf Erden". Die erlebte sie seit dem Sommer 1942 im Durchgangslager Westerbork, wo sie für den Amsterdamer "Judenrat" in der "Sozialen Versorgung der Durchreisenden" arbeitete. Ihre Briefe aus dieser Zeit beschreiben den täglichen Horror. Am 7. September 1943 wurde Etty Hillesum selbst nach Auschwitz-Birkenau deportiert und ist dort umgekommen. - Nach der Publikation von Auszügen aus den Tagebüchern 1981 war eine zuverlässige Neuübersetzung des Gesamtwerks überfällig. Die Ausgabe lässt uns eine Schriftstellerin und Denkerin neu entdecken, die zu Recht mit Anne Frank, Simone Weil und Edith Stein verglichen wird. Die Auswahl-Ausgabe "Das denkende Herz der Baracke" wurde in mehr als 20 Sprachen übersetzt, mit über 1 Mio. verkauften Exemplaren weltweit. Die Gesamtausgabe liegt in über 10 Sprachen vor

    Abstract: "On the eve of the Crimean War, about half a million people lived in the land of Palestine. They were Arabic-speaking. Most were Muslims, but about 60,000 were Christians of various denominations, and around 20,000 were Jews. In addition, they had to tolerate the presence of 50,000 Ottoman soldiers and officials as well as 10,000 Europeans. Their administrative life revolved around the sanjaq, the Ottoman sub-province, of which Ottoman Palestine had three: Nablus, Acre and Jerusalem. To some extent these administrative divisions corresponded to the topography. Palestine had four hilly regions: the Jerusalem mountains, the Nablus mountains, and two other areas: Hebron in the Jerusalem district, and Galilee in the Acre sub-province. Each geographical and administrative area had a major town as its capital, so that some of Palestine's most famous cities were foci of social and cultural life. Acre, Jerusalem, Hebron and Nablus were among these important towns, as were the smaller coastal towns of Haifa, Jaffa and Gaza"--

    Abstract: In 1933, as Hitler came to power, schoolteacher Anna Essinger hatched a daring and courageous plan: to smuggle her entire school out of Nazi Germany.     Abstract: Although the Enlightenment had seemed to bring an end to the widely held belief that Jews murdered Christian children for ritual purposes, charges of the so-called blood libel were surprisingly widespread in central and eastern Europe on either side of the turn to the twentieth century. Well over one hundred accusations were made against Jews in this period, and prosecutors and government officials in Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia broke with long established precedent to bring six of these cases forward in sensational public trials. In Blood Inscriptions Hillel J. Kieval examines four cases-the prosecutions that took place at Tiszaeszlár in Hungary (1882-83), Xanten in Germany (1891-92), Polná in Austrian Bohemia (1899-1900), and Konitz, then Germany, now in Poland (1900-1902)-to consider the means by which discredited beliefs came to seem once again plausible.Kieval explores how educated elites took up the accusations of Jewish ritual murder and considers the roles played by government bureaucracies, the journalistic establishment, forensic medicine, and advanced legal practices in structuring the investigations and trials. The prosecutors, judges, forensic scientists, criminologists, and academic scholars of Judaism and other expert witnesses all worked hard to establish their epistemological authority as rationalists, Kieval contends. Far from being a throwback to the Middle Ages, these ritual murder trials were in all respects a product of post-Enlightenment politics and culture. Harnessed to and disciplined by the rhetoric of modernity, they were able to proceed precisely because they were framed by the idioms of scientific discourse and rationality

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Verfolgung von Juden im Reichskommissariat Niederlande und rekonstruiert ihre Deportation nach Mauthausen auf Basis zeitgenössischer Quellen und ZeitzeugInnenaussagen. Sie legt die große Bedeutung offen, die dem KZ Mauthausen im Terrorsystem der nationalsozialistischen Besatzungsmacht zukam. Bis heute ist dieses Lager im kollektiven Gedächtnis der Niederlande stark verankert. Die antisemitische Politik der deutschen Besatzung in den Niederlanden erfuhr mit dem Februarstreik 1941 und dessen brutaler Niederschlagung eine wesentliche Verschärfung. Infolge mehrerer Verhaftungswellen ließen die nationalsozialistischen Behörden 1941 und 1942 hunderte jüdische Männer über andere Lager ins KZ Mauthausen deportieren. Da die Niederlande in den Jahren zuvor eines der wichtigsten Fluchtziele für deutsche und österreichische Jüdinnen und Juden waren, befanden sich unter den Verhafteten auch zahlreiche Emigranten.Im KZ Mauthausen wurde der überwiegende Teil der Deportierten Opfer von gezielten Mordaktionen. Ihr rascher Tod wurde in den Niederlanden auch medial thematisiert, sodass die Besatzungsbehörden die Verschleppung nach Mauthausen bald als bewusste Drohung zur Repression, Abschreckung und Einschüchterung der jüdischen Bevölkerung einsetzten.Andreas Schrabauer hat an der Universität Wien Geschichte und Germanistik studiert. Für seine Diplomarbeit '"... und der Block war judenleer' - Die Verhaftung und Deportation jüdischer Männer in den Niederlanden und ihre Ermordung im Konzentrationslager Mauthausen" wurde er 2018 mit dem Mauthausen-Memorial-Förderpreis ausgezeichnet.

    Abstract: "In the aftermath of World War II, a succession of mass supernatural events swept through a war-torn Germany. As millions were afflicted by a host of seemingly incurable maladies (including blindness and paralysis), waves of apocalyptic rumors crashed over the land. A messianic faith healer rose to extraordinary fame, prayer groups performed exorcisms, and enormous crowds traveled to witness apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Most strikingly, scores of people accused their neighbors of witchcraft, and found themselves in turn hauled into court on charges of defamation, assault, and even murder. What linked these events, in the wake of an annihilationist war and the Holocaust, was a widespread preoccupation with evil. While many histories emphasize Germany's rapid transition from genocidal dictatorship to liberal democracy, A Demon-Haunted Land places in full view the toxic mistrust, profound bitterness, and spiritual malaise that unfolded alongside the economic miracle. Drawing from a set of previously unpublished archival materials, acclaimed historian Monica Black argues that the surge of supernatural obsessions stemmed from the unspoken guilt and shame of a nation remarkably silent about what was euphemistically called "the most recent past."     Abstract: "The Sephardim in the Holocaust: A Forgotten People embraces the Sephardim of all the countries shattered by the Holocaust and pays tribute to the memory of the more than 160,000 Sephardim who perished. Isaac Jack Lévy and Rosemary Lévy Zumwalt draw on a wealth of archival sources, family history (Isaac and his family were expelled from Rhodes in 1938), and more than one hundred fifty interviews conducted with survivors during research trips to Belgium, Canada, France, Greece, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, the former Yugoslavia, and the United States. Lévy follows the Sephardim from Athens, Corfu, Cos, Macedonia, Rhodes, Salonika, and the former Yugoslavia to Auschwitz. The authors chronicle the interminable cruelty of the camps, from the initial selections to the grisly work of the Sonderkommandos inside the crematoria, detailing the distinctive challenges the Sephardim faced, with their differences in language, physical appearance, and pronunciation of Hebrew, all of which set them apart from the Ashkenazim. They document courageous Sephardic revolts, especially those by Greek Jews, which involved intricate planning, sequestering of gunpowder, and complex coordination and communication between Ashkenazi and Sephardic inmates-all done in the strictest of secrecy. And they follow a number of Sephardic survivors who took refuge in Albania with the benevolent assistance of Muslims and Christians who opened their doors to give sanctuary, and traces the fate of the approximately 430,000 Jews from Morocco, Algiers, Tunisia, and Libya from 1939 through the end of the war. The author's intention is to include the Sephardim in the shared tragedy with the Ashkenazim and others. The result is a much needed, accessible, and viscerally moving account of the Sephardim's unique experience of the Holocaust"--

    Abstract: Auf der Suche nach einem sicheren Hafen kreuzen Schiffe mit Geflüchteten an Bord über Flüsse und Meere. 32 Staaten beraten zehn Tage lang über die Aufnahme von Verfolgten - doch sie handeln nicht, am Ende gibt es nur Lippenbekenntnisse. Kein Staat will ihnen Zuflucht gewähren. Nach dem "Anschluss" Österreichs im März 1938 nahm die Verfolgung von Jüdinnen und Juden im Deutschen Reich immer mehr zu. Für viele war der einzige Ausweg die Flucht. Doch wohin? US-Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt lud zu einer internationalen Konferenz ein, die im Juli 1938 in Evian am Genfer See stattfand. Es wurde debattiert, diniert und um Einwanderungsquoten gefeilscht. Am Ende erklärte sich kein Staat bereit, seine Grenzen für die Verfolgten zu öffnen. Durch die Novemberpogrome verschärfte sich ihre Lage dramatisch. Im Mai 1939 legte die St. Louis in Hamburg mit 937 Kindern, Frauen und Männern an Bord Richtung Kuba ab. Den Hafen von Havanna in Sichtweite wurde der St. Louis die Einfahrt verweigert. Auch die USA und Kanada lehnten die Aufnahme ab. Nach tagelangen Verhandlungen musste das Schiff beidrehen und zurück nach Europa fahren - einem ungewissen Schicksal entgegen.

    Abstract: In December 1945, a Polish-born commuter on a Tel Aviv bus recognized a fellow rider as the former head of a town council the Nazis had established to manage the Jews. When he denounced the man as a collaborator, the rider leapt off the bus, pursued by passengers intent on beating him to death. Five years later, to address ongoing tensions within Holocaust survivor communities, the state of Israel instituted the criminal prosecution of Jews who had served as ghetto administrators or as kapos in concentration camps. Dan Porat brings to light more than three dozen little-known trials, held over the following two decades, of survivors charged with Nazi collaboration. Scouring police investigation files and trial records, he found accounts of Jewish policemen and camp functionaries who harassed, beat, robbed, and even murdered their brethren. But as the trials exposed the tragic experiences of the kapos, over time the courts and the public shifted from seeing them as evil collaborators to victims themselves, and the fervor to prosecute them abated. Porat shows how these trials changed Israel's understanding of the Holocaust and explores how the suppression of the trial records--long classified by the state and to this day withheld by Yad Vashem--affected history and memory. Sensitive to the devastating options confronting those who chose to collaborate, yet rigorous in its analysis, Bitter Reckoning invites us to rethink our ideas of collaboration and justice and to consider what it means to be a victim in extraordinary circumstances.--

    Abstract: Der grossformatige Begleitband zur grossen Ausstellung im Berliner Dokumentationszentrum Topografie des Terrors (Oktober 2019 - April 2020) spiegelt in sorgfältig erläuterten Bildbeispielen das Leben der Juden in den Niederlanden unter der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft. Rezension (ekz): Für die deutsche Ausgabe überarbeiteter, grossformatiger Begleitband zu der aus Amsterdam übernommenen, hochrangigen Ausstellung, die bis April 2020 im Berliner Dokumentationszentrum "Topographie des Terrors" läuft. Bei konkurrenzlosem Preis besticht die exzellente inhaltliche und optische Aufbereitung ebenso wie die hervorragende Druckqualität der Abbildungen. Einem historischen Überblick (zuletzt hierzu: K. Happe: 2018; B. Beuys: 2012) und einer Einführung zur Bildauswahl folgen in 12 jeweils kurz eingeleiteten Kapiteln die oft ganzseitigen Schwarz-Weiss-Fotos. Wie sah jüdischer Alltag vorher aus, was bedeutete die Besatzung konkret, wer waren die Täter, wer half ihnen, welche Wege führten schliesslich zu den Vernichtungslagern Auschwitz und Sobibor, und auch dem Leben nach dem Ende des Naziterrors gilt ein Kapitel. Dazu helfen ausführliche Bildlegenden und Zwischentexte mit Erläuterungen und historischem Kontext, häufig spüren sie auch den Schicksalen einzelner dargestellter Personen nach. Im Anhang Chronik, Karte, Bibliografie. - Unabhängig von der Ausstellung breit einsetzbar. (2 S)

Den Nazis entkam er nur knapp, wurde nach dem Krieg in den Niederlanden ein anerkannter Florist und Blumenhändler und tritt seitdem für die Rechte der Sinti und Roma ein. Rezension: Der Autor, der 2011 als erster Vertreter der Sinti und Roma vor dem Deutschen Bundestag sprach, erzählt hier die Geschichte seines Lebens. Geboren 1937, erlebte Weisz die Verfolgung durch die Nazis ("Der nationalsozialistische Völkermord", 2004), der er anders als seine Eltern und Geschwister knapp entkam, in den Niederlanden, wo er nach dem Krieg ein anerkannter Florist und Blumenhändler wurde. Gleichzeitig begann er, für die Rechte der Sinti und Roma einzutreten und die Erinnerung an ihre Verfolgung einzufordern. Weisz' knapp illustriertes Buch spiegelt die schwierige Geschichte seines Volkes im 20. Jahrhundert, ist aber weder Kampfschrift noch Klagelied. Er blickt mit Stolz auf das zurück, was er beruflich erreicht hat, und was ihm, trotz vieler Rückschläge, als Anerkennung bei seinem internationalen Einsatz für sein Volk zuteil wurde. Mit einfachen Worten erweckt seine lebendige Erzählung ohne in analytische Tiefen zu gehen Verständnis für die Geschichte und die kulturellen Eigenheiten der Sinti und Roma. Im Anhang Familienstammbaum, kurzer Geschichtsabriss, sehr knappe Bibliografie. (2)
