Abstract:
Relates the story of Irena Adamowicz, a Polish woman born in Warsaw in 1910, based on an interview carried out in Yiddish in 1958. Adamowicz was a social worker and a leader of the Polish Scouts movement; she participated in activities of Jewish youth movements as well, particularly Hashomer Hatzair. During World War II she served as a contact person between Polish and Jewish resistance groups, and between Jewish groups in different ghettos. In June 1942 she began to travel to various ghettos in Poland and Lithuania, carrying messages, letters, and money. She managed to convince leaders of youth movements that they should concentrate on resistance rather than on educational and cultural activities. In 1958 she was honored by Yad Vashem with the title of Righteous among the Nations.
