Abstract: Christian anti-Judaism is anything but a random lapse. It has been generated as an integral part of early Christian teaching ever since the 2nd cent. by Christian scholars and Church Fathers who wanted to prove both, Christ as God and, therefore, the end of. The decisive presupposition was to strip Christ of his Jewishness and turn him against his own people. The Council of Nicaea in 325 CE declared a confession of faith imposed on all so-called orthodox Christian communities in a dogmatic way and featuring a complete denial of Christ’s connection to Judaism during all his lifetime. In this way, Judaism and Jews were dogmatically extinguished. Christian anti-Judaism has become an inevitable part of Christian dogmatics. Therefore, it is inconsistent to maintain Christological dogmatics and at the same assure Jewish communities that the Catholic church has overcome its anti-Jewish attitude that is still based on dogmatics, teaching, and tradition.

Abstract: The establishment of the Abrahamic religions in Europe and the Mediterranean region roughly between the 4th and 9th centuries not only triggered a profound change in religious practices and content. It also indicates a fundamental change in the conceptions of religion and its social significance as a whole. The article contains observations on the changes in the role of ‚religion‘ in the course of this process, on the differences between Christianity, Judaism and Islam, and on the identity offerings of the three religions.
Abstract: The article deals with the complex history of coexistence, cooperation and enmity between Jews, Christians and Muslims up to the beginning of modern times in the form of theses, whose own traditions and public image are distorted by clichés and stories of catastrophes. They deal ofThe appearance of monotheistic concepts based on „Holy Scriptures“ as a leap in quality compared to traditional religions, their positive and negative potential. The enduring dependency of Christianity from Judaism, the momentous dissociation from each other, the fate of Jews under Christian rule in pre-Islamic times. The religious origin of Islam from Jewish and Christian traditions present in Arabia, its seizure of power in the Middle East and the multiple consequences for the Jews and Christians living there.A final conclusion draw consequences from the results for current situations of coexistence of monotheistic world religions and for those involved in the dialogue between them.

Abstract: This article outlines the elementary foundations of interreligious dialogue from an Islamic theological perspective. In various verses, the Koran refers to the Psalms, the Torah and the Gospel, as it sees itself as the consummation and keystone of divine revelations to mankind. Other verses indicate that the diversity of people is inherent in creation – both the linguistic, cultural and physical diversity as well as the ideological diversity is therefore to be understood as an expression of divine will and should be respected, appreciated and lived in constant exchange and dialogue. The prerequisite for this is an emphatic attitude towards others, the interest in getting to know them better and exchanging ideas with them. Getting to know one another as the basis of any dialogue is even mentioned in the Koran as the goal of creation: the goal of creating human beings in their diverse diversity is Ta’āruf (getting to know one another, learning about one another, knowing and recognizing one another). Based on this foundation, the foundations and interests of the interreligious dialogue with Jews and Christians are discussed from an Islamic-theological perspective.

Abstract: Starting from the historically saturated thesis of a continuity of anti-Semitism, beginning with the accusation of „deicide“ against the Jews, I try to show how the more recent forms of anti-Semitism build on the preceding ones. Its criticism would therefore have to begin with the religious (Christian) forms and show how these were secularized in the 18th and 19th centuries. Using central anti-Semitic images, I try to show that and to what extent even current anti-Semitism has Christian origins.

Abstract: In the lived practice of interreligious dialogue, it is not ‚religions‘ but concrete people with their respective unique religious biographies, convictions, interests and goals as well as dialogue experiences who are in dialogue with each other. This article offers insights from interreligious practice from the perspective of three protagonists who have been engaged in trilateral dialogue between Jews, Christians and Muslims in Austria for years. In a first step, Yuval Katz-Wilfing, Canan Yasar and Regina Polak describe their understanding of interreligious dialogue from the perspective of their own traditions. In a second step, the authors identify challenges facing interreligious dialogue in Austria. In doing so, it becomes clear how different the theological foundations, the goals and interests of dialogue are and how much the concrete practice of dialogue depends on personal approaches as well as on the respective socio-cultural and political context. The article thus identifies a field of research that should be given increased attention in the future.

Abstract: It is not recently that the discussion of antisemitism in the Islamic world and in the Islamic tradition has become an object of academic research. This article gives an overview of the major issues that need to be taken into consideration and deals with the topic from two basic perspectives: 1.) antisemitism as a recent phenomenon in Islamic countries (i.e., over the past two centuries), and 2.) the relationship between Islam and Judaism as central to understanding the development of this phenomenon.

Abstract: In research, a special interpretation of the Jews as „book carriers“ for the Christians is traced back to Augustine († 430): The Jews become, against their will, useful witnesses of the Christian history of salvation and proof of the truth of Christianity. Therefore, their existence was to be tolerated and recognised as a given reality, which allowed them to experience a certain protection in Christian dominions. The article questions the effect of this theological interpretation of Augustine and rather traces protective provisions for Jews back to the legacy of the legal collection Codex Theodosianus.

Abstract: The article introduces into the foundations and motivations for dialogue with Christians from a Jewish perspective. It gives a historical overview of different times and important turning points of Christian-Jewish relations until today. An analysis of rabbinic sources explains the theological Jewish understandings of Christians and Christianity, in particular the latest Jewish statements on Christianity.
Abstract: With Chapter 4 of Nostra aetate, the Declaration of the 2nd Vatican Council on the Relation of the Church to non-Christian Religions, the Catholic Church has adopted a – now positive – course for its attitude towards Judaism. Later documents gave a deeper explanation of this turn. The mission to Jews has been declared unnecessary as Jews clinging to their religion merit salvation. Protestant churches concurred in this position in several documents. This enabled a Christian-Jewish dialogue on an equal footing. Nevertheless mistrust remained on the Jewish side, and in the theological realm the dialogue deemed impossible to important rabbis like Rav Soloveitchik. Documents by eminent Church leaders looking at the dialogue as a vehicle for mission work corroborated to this mistrust, but couldn’t block the readiness for dialogue. The dialogue with Islam is only at its beginning. Despite being theologically nearer many rules of the Sharia are incompatible with Jewish law.

Abstract: A Department of Jewish studies in the German-speaking world – integrated into a network of institutions dealing with the subject of Judaism – is required on the one hand to conduct the highest academic research, but on the other hand also to make a socio-political contribution. In doing so, all forms of anti-Semitism must be combated. Interreligious dialogue has been an important concern of the Department since its inception.

Abstract: Already in the formative period of Islam, Prophet Muhammad expressed great trust in Jewish and Christian communities. He sent oppressed members of his community to Abyssinia to seek protection from the Christian ruler there. Even when he wrote a community order for the city of Medina, he considered it part of the united community that was formed there. From the very beginning, Muslims saw themselves in the long tradition of Jewish and Christian religion. In the post-prophetic period, Muslim-ruled states emerged that offered a home to people of different religions. Mutual influence took place on various levels. It is instructive to look at this because it shaped the perception of the other and of the self for a long time. While religious beliefs and theological doctrines played a role in this, political, geographical, social and economic moments must also be taken into account in the historical context.
