Abstract: Already in the formative period of Islam, Prophet Muhammad expressed great trust in Jewish and Christian communities. He sent oppressed members of his community to Abyssinia to seek protection from the Christian ruler there. Even when he wrote a community order for the city of Medina, he considered it part of the united community that was formed there. From the very beginning, Muslims saw themselves in the long tradition of Jewish and Christian religion. In the post-prophetic period, Muslim-ruled states emerged that offered a home to people of different religions. Mutual influence took place on various levels. It is instructive to look at this because it shaped the perception of the other and of the self for a long time. While religious beliefs and theological doctrines played a role in this, political, geographical, social and economic moments must also be taken into account in the historical context.
