Abstract:
In research, a special interpretation of the Jews as „book carriers“ for the Christians is traced back to Augustine († 430): The Jews become, against their will, useful witnesses of the Christian history of salvation and proof of the truth of Christianity. Therefore, their existence was to be tolerated and recognised as a given reality, which allowed them to experience a certain protection in Christian dominions. The article questions the effect of this theological interpretation of Augustine and rather traces protective provisions for Jews back to the legacy of the legal collection Codex Theodosianus.
