Abstract: The article introduces into the foundations and motivations for dialogue with Christians from a Jewish perspective. It gives a historical overview of different times and important turning points of Christian-Jewish relations until today. An analysis of rabbinic sources explains the theological Jewish understandings of Christians and Christianity, in particular the latest Jewish statements on Christianity.
Abstract: With Chapter 4 of Nostra aetate, the Declaration of the 2nd Vatican Council on the Relation of the Church to non-Christian Religions, the Catholic Church has adopted a – now positive – course for its attitude towards Judaism. Later documents gave a deeper explanation of this turn. The mission to Jews has been declared unnecessary as Jews clinging to their religion merit salvation. Protestant churches concurred in this position in several documents. This enabled a Christian-Jewish dialogue on an equal footing. Nevertheless mistrust remained on the Jewish side, and in the theological realm the dialogue deemed impossible to important rabbis like Rav Soloveitchik. Documents by eminent Church leaders looking at the dialogue as a vehicle for mission work corroborated to this mistrust, but couldn’t block the readiness for dialogue. The dialogue with Islam is only at its beginning. Despite being theologically nearer many rules of the Sharia are incompatible with Jewish law.
