Traces the meaning of the word "holocaust" from its use for "burnt offering" in the Greek and Latin translations of the Bible, to its first use for mass slaughter in English, Spanish, and Italian sources in the 19th century. In 1882 an Italian historian used it to describe an anti-Jewish pogrom. It was applied to the Nazi genocide of the Jews as soon as it was known: in 1942, for instance, by the London "News Chronicle"; in 1943 by Sir Herbert Louis Samuel in a speech in the House of Lords; in 1945 in an American publication on restitution. The first scholarly publication to use it was the "Yad Vashem Bulletin" in 1957; English-language encyclopedias began to use the heading in the 1970s. In Germany the term took hold much more slowly, beginning with the TV series of that name. Notes that many, both Jews and non-Jews, object to the term because it seems to identify mass murder with a sacred rite.
