Abstract:
Discusses the role of the Wehrmacht propaganda machine in the dissemination of antisemitic propaganda in the Nazi-occupied countries. The Wehrmacht's main propaganda arm was its propaganda companies (PKs) set up in 1938. As an agency providing news and photographs from the combat area, these companies were involved also in anti-Jewish propaganda aimed at the German population. In 1939-41, the PKs collaborated with the Propaganda Ministry in shooting antisemitic films, notably "Der ewige Jude"; their cameramen and photographers also filmed some of the ghettos in Poland. In 1941-44, the PKs conducted propaganda aimed at the Red Army, at the civilian population in the Balkans, the USSR and France, and at German soldiers as well. The PKs' activities in the rear tried to strengthen the anti-Jewish feelings of the population and to justify the measures taken against the Jews; it is difficult to assess its real impact on the population. The PKs' activities invalidate postwar attempts to whitewash the Wehrmacht in regard to its involvement in the Holocaust.
