Abstract:
While aerial photos taken by German pilots duringWWI over Palestine are well-known and have beenextensively studied, the activity of the Luftwaffeover Mandatory Palestine during WWII remainslargely unknown. Research in British, Americanand German archives has revealed that around 50German photo-reconnaissance missions took placeover Mandatory Palestine between 28 May 1941and 13 September 1944. This article examinesthe circumstances under which these flights werecarried out and the ways by which the Britishsought to interdict them. The article reproduces aselection of Luftwaffe aerial photos, interpreted byGerman intelligence officers and commented bythe authors. Also presented are target sheets whichthe Luftwaffe’s Air Intelligence Branch created onthe photos’ basis. Haifa was the main target ofthe German reconnaissance planes, but they alsooverflew targets in the central and southern parts ofthe country, one of them even reaching the Gulf ofAqaba. Consequently, the Luftwaffe photos offer aunique view of Palestine during World War II.
