Abstract:
Describes the meeting between Roman Dmowski and Louis Marshall in New York in October 1918. The aim of a series of meetings of Polish politicians with Jewish American leaders was to discuss Polish-Jewish relations in order to influence the shape of independent Poland and the status of its Jewish minority. Quotes the full text of a letter and memorandum addressed by Marshall to President Wilson after the meeting. The problem of the economic boycott of Jews organized by Dmowski from 1912, in Poland, is discussed. Dmowski attempted to justify this boycott. His aggressive behavior influenced the Jewish lobby's pressure at the Paris Peace Conference for special guarantees for minorities in Poland. Deals, as well, with the attitude of Ignacy Paderewski, who did not agree with the opinions of Dmowski and who had good relations with American Jews, although he partially justified the boycott.
Note:
Louis Marshall's correspondence with President Wilson and I. Paderewski.
