Abstract:
Germans (and Italians) living in Romania enjoyed a special status and were exempted from Romanianization measures that affected other ethnic minorities. Many ethnic Germans, supported by Nazi Germany, tried to participate in what they referred to as Aryanization of Jewish properties and businesses - to the chagrin of Romanian authorities, who saw that as sabotage of Romanianization. Some Romanian Germans who had repatriated to Germany even returned to Romania in order to profit from the Aryanization. Others deplored and even protested against the Aryanization; paradoxically, they sometimes defended their Jewish business partners before Romanian authorities.
