Abstract: The word “Zion” is often interpreted to be a synonym for Jerusalem. However, the double usage of the terms suggests that there is a subtle distinction between them. While Jerusalem is a geographic toponym, Zion is located at the intersection of the space-time axis. The biblical notion of Zion refers to both a moment in time and a point in space. This article will discuss Zion and the varying eschatological figures that it represents in three parts. First, the biblical references to Zion will be briefly examined. Second, the place of Zion in Jewish messianism will be explored. Third, the position of Protestant churches that espouse a “Christian Zionist” theology will be presented. The conclusion will discuss the challenges and opportunities that the biblical notion of Zion presents for the furtherance of ecumenical dialogue among Churches.
