Abstract: Judges 19:2 poses a text critical problem that has vexed scholars for over a century. According to the MT, the Levite's concubine left her husband and returned to her father's house in Bethlehem because she had "played the harlot against him." According to LXXA, the woman left her husband because she was "angry with him." However, no other Greek, Latin or Aramaic variant of the verse supports MT or LXXA. This article proposes a new hypothesis for understanding the relationship among the various textual variants of Judg 19:2. It will be argued that the earliest Vorlage used the verb –”— in the hitpa 'el form which has the meaning "to be furious". This Vorlage is reflected in LXXA. Later scribes then read the verb –”— in the qal form that has multiple meanings that depend on context. LXXB translated the verb in Greek with the meaning of "to move on". In contrast, Pseudo-Philo interpreted the verb with the meaning of "to transgress". The MT, which emended "to transgress" to "to play the harlot", represents the final stage in the redaction process.

Abstract: The methodology of intertextual analysis of biblical texts consists of comparing two texts to identify points of thematic and lexical continuity between them. As the methodology requires close attention to lexical details, most intertextual analyses of OT passages use the MT version of both texts as the basis of comparison. This reliance on the MT raises a number of methodological concerns that can lead to misleading conclusions. Using the case of Genesis 19 and Judges 19 as an example, it will be argued that most of the claimed intertextual allusions in the latter text were introduced by a late redactor as literary embellishments to what was already a well-developed narrative. Although this conclusion is speculative, it nonetheless suggests that intertextual analysis that is limited to a comparison of two texts in their final MT versions understates the complexity and subtlety of the gradual compositional development process of biblical texts.

Abstract: The creation of the State of Israel raises within the churches the question of the recognition of this new reality and its theological interpretation. On the Jewish side, this recognition is awaited because it seems to prove that Christian theology is really turning its back on the myth of the wandering Jew. This multi-voiced article outlines the state of the question of the position of the churches in relation to the land of Israel in its contemporary context. It shows the complexity of the subject, both in the Catholic Church and in the different tendencies within Protestantism. It also highlights the sometimes ambiguous reception of this recognition in a plural Jewish world.

Abstract: The word “Zion” is often interpreted to be a synonym for Jerusalem. However, the double usage of the terms suggests that there is a subtle distinction between them. While Jerusalem is a geographic toponym, Zion is located at the intersection of the space-time axis. The biblical notion of Zion refers to both a moment in time and a point in space. This article will discuss Zion and the varying eschatological figures that it represents in three parts. First, the biblical references to Zion will be briefly examined. Second, the place of Zion in Jewish messianism will be explored. Third, the position of Protestant churches that espouse a “Christian Zionist” theology will be presented. The conclusion will discuss the challenges and opportunities that the biblical notion of Zion presents for the furtherance of ecumenical dialogue among Churches.
