Abstract:
Discusses why Jacob Kaplan, Chief Rabbi of France, agreed to negotiate with the Catholic Church concerning the return to their family of the two Jewish Finaly children, who were converted to Catholicism after the war. Argues that Kaplan was driven not by ingratiation, but by a wish for dialogue. His main concern was the return of the children from Spain, to where they were whisked away from France and sent into hiding in 1953. The agreement that was concluded strengthened philosemitic forces within the Church, still largely marked by anti-Judaism. Affected by how the Finaly Affair was handled by Kaplan, the French Church took an active role in the Second Vatican Council. The nuns of Notre Dame de Sion profoundly changed their attitude toward the Jews, partly thanks to Kaplan's conciliatory approach.
