Abstract: Emphasizes the role of Cardinal Gerlier of Lyon in the 1953 abduction of the Finaly children, who were hidden in France during the Shoah and were converted to Catholicism after the war by their French trustee, their Jewish parents having been killed in Auschwitz. Legal proceedings, brought on by family members in Israel in order to have the children returned to them, lasted from 1949-53 and went all the way to the Supreme Court. An enormous press campaign erupted when the children were abducted in February 1953 by members of the clergy, who refused to give them up on the ground that they had been baptized as Catholics. Discusses the debate between Gerlier and Pope Pius XII, who expressed the view that the children should not have been baptized, but also spoke about the Church's obligation toward them. Compares the position of Pius XII on the validity of the baptism to the more uncompromising view of the Holy Office, Gerlier, and many other French prelates. Shows that Catholic leaders were divided concerning the baptism of rescued Jewish children.

Abstract: Describes the Finaly Affair, concerning the struggle to return to their Jewish family two Jewish children hidden in France during the Shoah, who were converted to Catholicism after the war by their French trustee. Notes that although the Church has not officially expressed regret for its role, the nuns of Notre Dame de Sion announced soon after the Affair that they would stop praying for the conversion of the Jews and promote understanding instead. Many of the nuns, including some of those directly involved, worked in favor of the Nostra aetate declaration. Views this document as a first step towards Catholic repentance.

Abstract: Discusses why Jacob Kaplan, Chief Rabbi of France, agreed to negotiate with the Catholic Church concerning the return to their family of the two Jewish Finaly children, who were converted to Catholicism after the war. Argues that Kaplan was driven not by ingratiation, but by a wish for dialogue. His main concern was the return of the children from Spain, to where they were whisked away from France and sent into hiding in 1953. The agreement that was concluded strengthened philosemitic forces within the Church, still largely marked by anti-Judaism. Affected by how the Finaly Affair was handled by Kaplan, the French Church took an active role in the Second Vatican Council. The nuns of Notre Dame de Sion profoundly changed their attitude toward the Jews, partly thanks to Kaplan's conciliatory approach.

Abstract: In 1945, Antoinette Brun, director of the Municipal Nursery of Grenoble, along with several Catholic clerics, kidnapped and baptized Robert and Gérald Finaly, the ten- and eleven-year-old sons of an Austrian Jewish couple deported to Auschwitz, where they perished. Describes the development of the affair until 1953 when the children were returned to their Jewish family in Israel, focusing on the debate in French public opinion. As in the Dreyfus Affair, the Finaly Affair aroused both antisemitic and anti-clerical feelings.
