Abstract:
Argues that it is a mistake to hold Nietzsche even indirectly responsible for Auschwitz. He opposed both racism and antisemitism, which were crucial to Nazism. He was also a fierce individualist and, hence, any propagandistic use of his ideas involved drastic distortion of them. Although he was very critical of Judaism and even more so of Christianity, he saw a possible positive role for the former in Europe. He also viewed nationalism as very dangerous, particularly in Germany. This makes him an unlikely forerunner of fascism. Rather, he should be seen as a "tragic prophet of the spiritual vacuum that gave birth to the totalitarian abysses of the twentieth century."
