Abstract:
Discusses Romania's preparedness to admit its part in the Holocaust. Under communism, the country's Jewish heritage and the Holocaust were repressed; after 1989 attitudes changed slowly, under international pressure. President Ion Iliescu's denial, in an Israeli paper in 2003, that the Holocaust took place also on Romanian soil, led to angry reactions worldwide and to the establishment of an international Elie Wiesel-commission, charged with processing the Holocaust in Romania. Today two openly antisemitic, extreme right-wing parties operate in Romania, but official government policy follows the recommendations of the Elie Wiesel-commission. The Holocaust is commemorated in various ways, Holocaust studies have been introduced on an academic level, and Holocaust education has begun to enter the school curriculum.
