    Abstract: Emmie Arbel überlebte als kleines Mädchen die Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück und Bergen-Belsen. David Schaffer entkam dem Genozid in Transnistrien, weil er sich nicht an die Regeln hielt. Die Brüder Nico und Rolf Kamp versteckten sich in den Niederlanden dreizehn Mal vor ihren Mördern. Zusammen mit den Überlebenden haben drei international bekannte Zeichner:innen deren Geschichten in Graphic Novels erzählt, die unvergesslich vor Augen führen, was der Holocaust für Kinder bedeutete - und nicht nur für sie. Nur wenige Zeitzeugen des Holocaust leben noch. Die meisten von ihnen haben Verfolgung und Massenmord als Kinder traumatisch erlebt. Dieses Buch will die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in der Zusammenarbeit von Überlebenden und Zeichner:innen auf ungewöhnliche Weise bewahren und weitergeben, gerade auch an eine junge Leserschaft, indem es eingespielte Sehgewohnheiten und Bilder vom Holocaust aufbricht. Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

Bianca Patricia Pick legt in ihrer Untersuchung der autobiographischen und fiktionalen Texte der jüdischen Verfolgten Albert Drach, Jean Améry, Edgar Hilsenrath, Imre Kertész und Ruth Klüger ein Hauptaugenmerk auf die Deutungskategorie der Distanz als Schreibverfahren, das Züge des Sarkastischen, Grotesken, des Ressentiments und des Protokolls annimmt.

    Abstract: In the Hobsbawmian long 19th century, gender and processes of sexualization and feminization have been crucial in the construction of the »Jewish Other«. Ulrike Brunotte explores how these processes came about by addressing imaginative, aesthetic, and epistemological questions. She analyzes how literature, psychoanalysis and the performing arts traverse and react to the ambivalence of racialized stereotypes. The »femininity puzzle« presents itself in two ways: first in the role of effeminization of the male Jew in antisemitic discourse, and then in the transgressive forms of femininity connected to Jewish women, especially the allosemitic orientalization in the figure of the »Beautiful Jewess«.

    Abstract: The corpus of Aramaic magic bowls from Sasanian Mesopotamia is perhaps the most important source we have for studying the everyday beliefs and practices of the Jewish, Christian, Mandaean, Manichaean, Zoroastrian and Pagan communities on the eve of the Islamic conquests. The bowls published in this volume are from the Schøyen Collection, which has over 650 texts in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, Mandaic and Syriac, and forms the largest collection of its kind in the world. This volume presents editions of fifty-five Jewish Babylonian Aramaic texts, with accompanying introductions, translations, philological notes, photographs and indices.     Abstract: Die Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur hat Hochkonjunktur. Was aber ist unter dem Begriff eigentlich zu verstehen? Wo ist seine Verwendung sinnvoll, wo stößt sie an Grenzen? Bislang wurde der Terminus weitgehend unreflektiert benutzt, Versuche einer Konzeptualisierung haben in Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft kaum stattgefunden. Insofern beschreitet der vorliegende Band neue Wege. Die Beiträge lassen anhand unterschiedlicher methodischer Näherungen und auf der Grundlage exemplarischen Textmaterials ein umfassendes Bild von der Reichweite und den Grenzen des Begriffs Holocaustliteratur als eines literaturwissenschaftlichen Konzepts entstehen. Dabei wird hinterfragt, wo Funktionalität und Sinnhaftigkeit einer solchen Begrifflichkeit, insbesondere mit Blick auf immer neue und in der zeitgenössischen Literatur vielfältiger werdende Formen der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Genozid, zu verorten sind. Die Beiträge bringen eine wichtige Erkenntnis klar zum Vorschein: Die literaturwissenschaftliche Erforschung der Holocaustliteratur kommt ohne präzise Definition ihres Untersuchungsgegenstandes nicht aus, doch impliziert eine solche Definition keineswegs, dass es sich dabei um ein starres System handelt. Vielmehr erweist sich die Holocaustliteratur als ein in all seinen strukturellen wie funktionalen Facetten veränderliches Phänomen der Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte, das aufgrund seiner thematischen Breite und der Vielfalt ästhetischer Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten zu immer neuen Lektüren und Relektüren einlädt

Der Band unterstreicht die analytische Fruchtbarkeit des Assimilationskonzepts und legt bisher vernachlässigte normative Gehalte frei.Anhand der jüdischen Assimilation und (post-)kolonialen Konstellationen werden Prozesse und Repräsentationen der Verähnlichung und Inkorporierung in ihrer Komplexität, Ambivalenz und Widerspenstigkeit untersucht. Assimilation erscheint dabei als politisches Geschehen, das nicht nur mit polemischen Äußerungsformen verbunden ist, sondern das Sprache selbst zum Gegenstand hat. Statt Eingliederung in eine Monokultur, so wird gezeigt, kann Assimilation auch reziprokes, nicht-hierarchisches Lernen bedeuten und besitzt damit ein interkulturelles Potenzial, das starre Grenzziehungen und Essentialisierungen aufbricht.

Doch welche Möglichkeiten, welche Erzählräume standen ihnen tatsächlich zur Verfügung? Wie und unter welchen Umständen konnten sie ihr Zeugnis narrativ gestalten und in welcher Weise lässt sich diese Gestaltung heute angemessen würdigen? Die vorliegende Studie analysiert die diskursiven Bedingungen der Entstehung und Rezeption sowohl literarischer als auch videographierter Zeugnisse von Überlebenden. Damit werden die beiden heute wichtigsten Formen autobiographischer Erinnerung an die nationalsozialistische Vernichtungsgeschichte erstmals in ein Verhältnis zueinander gesetzt. Diese Verhältnisbestimmung führt zu einer neuen Ethik der Zeugenschaft, die zugleich als Bestandsaufnahme unserer heutigen Kultur der Erinnerung an die jüdische Katastrophe verstanden werden kann.

Birnbaum (1891?1989) is the uncontested pioneer in two large closely related research areas, namely historical Jewish linguistics and the palaeography of Hebrew and all Jewish successor languages.     Abstract: In order to establish a model for the investigation of 'incomplete L1 acquisition' - the phenomenon whereby a bilingual speaker incompletely acquires the socially non-dominant language - the author offers a description and analysis of the speech of ten elderly speakers of Yiddish who acquired Yiddish as an L1 simultaneously with English but have not used the language since childhood. Of central interest is the question of whether the divergent forms in the data are the result of L1 attrition - the loss of knowledge once possessed - or incomplete L1 acquisition - lack of initial acquisition of the forms reflecting in the data 'fossilized' divergent child language. Bringing together certain disparate theoretical ideas, the author accepts Chomskyan notions of innateness and the language faculty while also considering the role of input in social/sociolinguistic terms. Specifically, issues such as 'linguistic identity' and patterns of use are shown to affect the quality of acquisition in bilingual situations. Through comparison with the speech of 'native' Yiddish adults, and mono- and bilingual German and Dutch children, a linguistic rule (present perfect) is isolated and shown to be due to incomplete L1 acquisition and not L1 attrition. In short, the study offers an account of what occurs when the child's innate inclination to organize linguistic input into a mature linguistic system collides with insurmountable social and sociolinguistic hindrances to 'normal' acquisition. Die Monographie erarbeitet einen theoretischen Rahmen für die Untersuchung von unvollständigem Erstspracherwerb am Beispiel des Jiddischen. Die Analyse konzentriert sich auf das Sprachverhalten älterer Menschen, die Jiddisch gleichzeitig mit Englisch erwarben und die jiddische Sprache seit der Kindheit nicht mehr verwendeten. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, ob ungrammatische Formen im untersuchten Material auf den Verlust ursprünglich gekannter Formen oder auf den unvollständigen Erstspracherwerb zurückzuführen sind. The study focuses on the linguistic behaviour of elderly speakers who acquired Yiddish simultaneously with English and have not used the language since childhood. The central question is whether ungrammatical forms in the data can be traced to the attrition of forms once acquired or to the incomplete acquisition of those forms. With regard to Yiddish present perfect rules, results favor the latter explanation, indicating long-fossilized, divergent child language
