Abstract:
Refutes the generally accepted view that American Jews only began to speak publicly about the Holocaust in the 1960s. Examination of primary materials indicates that by the 1950s American Jews thought, spoke, and wrote about the fate of European Jewry both amongst themselves (e.g. in Yiddish, in sermons, in prayerbook supplements) and to a more general public (via radio programs, publications of memoirs, references in history books, activities of Jewish organizations that were brought to the attention of the American public, etc.). Memorial evenings devoted to the Holocaust began in the late 1940s.
