Abstract:
Relates the association made by Spaniards in the late 15th-16th centuries of Jewish, Converso, and Christian residents of Toledo as aubergine (i.e. eggplant) eaters, and the negative aspects of this terminology. The aubergine had been introduced to Spain by the Muslims; it became a must on the Jewish table and, ultimately, in the diet of Conversos. The word "berengena" (aubergine) was used as a disparaging nickname for Jews and Conversos, as well as for Toledans. Quotes from poetry written by Old Christian and New Christian writers in which the aubergine is used in relation to Conversos and their negative traits.
