Abstract: "Three Faces of Antisemitism examines the three primary forms of antisemitism as they emerged in modern and contemporary Germany, and then in other countries. Essays draw on the author's historical scholarship over the years on the form antisemitism assumed on the far right in Weimar and Nazi Germany, in the Communist regime in East Germany, and in the West German radical left, and in Islamist organizations during World War II and the Holocaust, and afterwards in the Middle East. The resurgence of antisemitism since the attacks of September 11, 2001 has origins in the ideas, events and circumstances in Europe and the Middle East in the half century from the 1920s to the 1970s. This book covers the period since 1945 when neo-Nazism was on the fringes of Western and world politics, and the persistence of antisemitism took place primarily when its leftist and Islamist forms combined antisemitism with anti-Zionism in attacks on the state of Israel. The collection includes recent essays of commentary that draw attention to the simultaneous presence of antisemitism's three faces. While scholarship on the antisemitism of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust remains crucial, the scholarly, intellectual and political effort to fight antisemitism in our times requires examination of antisemitism's leftist and Islamist forms as well. This book will be of interest to scholars researching antisemitism, racism, conspiracy theories, the far right, the far left, and Islamism"--

Abstract: "Scholars in England in the Middle Ages understood the value of studying languages and their grammar, and the Hebrew language was theologically relevant and ideologically potent. Because it was difficult to procure Hebrew bibles, dictionaries and grammar manuals, some Christian scholars created their own manuals and textbooks with the help of Jewish teachers. This volume presents an edition, facsimile, and analysis of one such learning tool, a succinct Hebrew grammar written in Hebrew, Latin, and Anglo-Norman French in England in the thirteenth century."--

Abstract: "This collection of thirty-one studies on the Pentateuch represents more than twenty years of Konrad Schmid's research and publications advocating for a new view of the Pentateuch's formation. Schmid's essays present the case for a Persian period Priestly document that provided a basic narrative thread to the Torah, which included separate, pre-Priestly components of narratives in Genesis and the Moses story. Schmid's open discussion includes evidence from various fields, such as literary history, comparative cultural history, historical linguistics, epigraphy, and archaeology. The essays are divided into eight sections usefully structured around the themes of the Pentateuch in the Enneateuch, the history of scholarship, the formation of the Torah, Genesis, the Moses story, the Priestly document, legal texts, and the Pentateuch in the history of ancient Israel's religion"--Publisher, page 4 of cover

Abstract: "Before the Scrolls: A Material Approach to Israel's Prophetic Library traces the media history of the biblical prophetic corpus in order to propose a material approach to biblical literature. Though often ignored, the realia of a text's form, format, production, and material substance have profound influence on the meaning of the text. The literature of the Bible was not initially written as discrete books with determined beginnings, middles, and ends. Before the Scrolls argues instead that biblical compositions of length, such as the great prophetic books Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, were initially written on loosely organized collections of multiple short papyrus scrolls. Only later in the Hellenistic era were these compositions edited, organized, and copied into the longer book-scrolls known from the Dead Sea. The shift from prophetic library to linear prophetic book-scroll represents a transformation in material medium that had significant effects on that literature. This material approach to the prophetic corpus suggests novel solutions to classic problems in the field such as the relationship between the MT and LXX of Jeremiah and the between First and Second Isaiah. The failure to account for the materiality of the prophetic corpus has led scholarship to occasionally ask the wrong questions of these compositions and has blinded it to the vital role that Hellenistic bookmakers played in the creation of the Bible as we know it"

Abstract: "Judaism is often described as the religion of the book par excellence - a religious movement built around the study of and commentary on the Hebrew Bible and steeped in a culture of bookishness that evolved from an unrelenting focus on a canonical text. Standard works of modern scholarship reinforce this view -- that the Jewish tradition has always embraced the Bible as a blueprint for the religious life. In this monograph, Rebecca Scharbach Wollenberg argues that this depiction of the tradition does not hold for much if its existence -- and more specifically, not for the first thousand years after the Bible was first canonized. Prior to the modern era, late antique and early medieval rabbinic authorities were deeply ambivalent about the Hebrew Bible (aka Old Testament, aka Torah). The Bible can be a really unsettling book because of its repeated depictions of impiety, taboo behavior of all sorts, and unapologetic expressions of doubt and skepticism. It's no accident, then, that Jews -- including their rabbis -- seldom opened a Bible during this long period. But how can you avoid Bible reading while being part of a community in which that same Bible is supposed to be a central pillar of communal identity? The rabbis met this challenge by instituting two workarounds. On the one hand, they incorporated ritualized readings of biblical passages into liturgical gatherings, so that the text was "read" (or chanted) in a rote, formulaic way -- a way that did not lend itself to deep musing about meaning. In such gatherings, the Torah scroll was treated as an entity that manifests sacred powers in its own right (hence the development of rituals governing the handling of the scrolls, including the practices of binding, unrolling, and rolling them). On the other hand, the rabbis constructed a vast edifice of interpretation of Scripture that came to be known in the tradition as the "Oral Torah", including rabbinic stories, commentary, and laws (and associated with terms such as midrash and Talmud). Both of these workarounds, argues Wollenberg, served to marginalize the written text of the Hebrew Bible as a source of cultural transmission and knowledge"

Abstract: "In Uprooting the Diaspora, Sarah Cramsey explores how the Jewish citizens rooted in interwar Poland and Czechoslovakia became the ideal citizenry for a post-World War II Jewish state in the Middle East. She asks, how did new interpretations of Jewish belonging emerge and gain support amongst Jewish and non-Jewish decision makers exiled from wartime east central Europe and the powerbrokers surrounding them? Usually, the creation of the State of Israel is cast as a story that begins with Herzl and is brought to fulfillment by the Holocaust. To reframe this trajectory, Cramsey draws on a vast array of historical sources to examine what she calls a "transnational conversation" carried out by a small but influential coterie of Allied statesmen, diplomats in international organizations, and Jewish leaders who decided that the overall disentangling of populations in postwar east central Europe demanded the simultaneous intellectual and logistical embrace of a Jewish homeland in Palestine as a territorial nationalist project. Uprooting the Diaspora slows down the chronology between 1936 and 1946 to show how individuals once invested in multi-ethnic visions of diasporic Jewishness within east central Europe came to define Jewishness primarily in ethnic terms. This revolution in thinking about Jewish belonging combined with a sweeping change in international norms related to population transfers and accelerated, deliberate postwar work on the ground in the region to further uproot Czechoslovak and Polish Jews from their prewar homes"--

Abstract: Uncovers the history of creative adaptation and transformation through a close analysis of the creation of the Sefer Hasidim book. In 1538, a partnership of Jewish silk makers in the city of Bologna published a book entitled Sefer Hasidim, a compendium of rituals, stories, and religious instruction that primarily originated in medieval Franco-Germany. How these men, of Italian and Spanish descent, came to produce a book that would come to shape Ashkenazic culture, and Jewish culture more broadly, over the next four centuries is the basis of this kaleidoscopic study of the history of Hebrew printing in the sixteenth century. During these early years of printing, the classic works of ancient and medieval Hebrew and Jewish literature became widely available to Jewish (and non-Jewish) readers for the first time. Printing, though, was not merely the duplication and distribution of pre-existing manuscripts, it was the creative adaptation and transformation of those manuscripts by printers. Ranging from Catholic Bologna to Protestant Basel to the Jewish heartland of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Joseph A. Skloot uncovers the history of that creativity by examining the first two print editions of Sefer Hasidim. Along the way, he demonstrates how volumes that were long thought to be eternal and unchanging were in fact artifacts of historical agency and contingency, created by and for human beings

Abstract: "Rabbi Diana Fersko is used to having difficult conversations with members of her congregation about how the rise is antisemitism is affecting their lives, from the threat of violence to microaggressions and identity denial. In We Need to Talk About Antisemitism, she gives us the tools we need to understand the state of antisemitism today. Unpacking the origins of the most prominent conspiracy theories about the Jewish people, Rabbi Fersko shows how antisemitism enters our public discourse in sometimes obvious but often incredibly subtle ways. Abstract: "How did exiled musicians from Germany and Austria, who reached safety at Kitchener Camp in Britain, find themselves in an Australian internment camp in New South Wales in 1940? What were the institutions that helped Jewish refugee musicians survive in wartime Shanghai? What happened to Austrian musicians who were trapped in the Netherlands after the German occupation? These and other questions, and the larger stories they refer to, form the compelling content of this book. Other topics include the struggle of the Vienna operetta composers Granichstaedten and Katscher in USA, the relationship of émigré composer Berthold Goldschmidt to his native Hamburg and the reception of his 'exile opera' Beatrice Cenci. Studies of Mischa Spoliansky's music for the movie Mr. Emmanuel (1944) and Franz Reizenstein's radio opera Anna Kraus form part of the fourteen essays on exile musical history in Britain, Europe, USA, Australia and the Far East, based on cutting edge archival research and interviews by leading scholars"--

Abstract: "Salo Baron was born in 1895 under the Habsburg empire and became one of the greatest historians of Judaism. He testified at the Eichmann trial. Baron was invited to teach in New York in 1926. When he got here he discovered what he thought was the American exception: as a new society, the United States would have not experienced any persecutions of Jews. That would alone refute--in his own words--"a lachrymose version of history," the story that lays out the destiny of Judaism as an uninterrupted list of persecutions and massacres. At most, he thought, American Jews would meet with prejudice or social barriers, but never antisemitism theorized as a political ideology. And yet, in 1913, in Atlanta, there was the case of Leo Frank: the lynching of a Jew accused of the ritual murder of a young woman, even though the charges had been dropped. It was the first American instance of hate-driven antisemitism. Some years later, Roosevelt's New Deal radically transformed the destiny of American Jews. For the first time powerful figures such as Henry Morgenthau and Louis Brandeis came to the fore, and Jews experienced a newfound prominence. Antisemites in America declared that Jews, having taken over the government, would destroy America's identity. During the period from Roosevelt to Obama, antisemitism increased and was clearly seen recently in the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville in 2017 and in the Tree of Life Synagogue mass shooting in Pittsburgh in 2018. Antisemitic violence continues to grow here. On January 6, 2021, the attempted coup against the Capitol saw an outpouring of violently antisemitic slogans. All of which begs the question: does this mean that the romantic view of American exceptionalism, sanctified by many historians of American Judaism, has been refuted once and for all? Is the idea of this place of exile, seen as a protective and exceptional "home," in fact an illusion? Should it also be considered as the return of a "lachrymose" history? This book seeks to explore the answers to these questions"

Abstract: "This startling exploration of the past and present of antisemitism starts with the surprisingly complex basics: What is a Jew? What is antisemitism? Why does it happen? Author Philip Slayton looks at the very different experiences of Jews in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and America, and the longstanding tensions between Jews and Muslims, and Jews and Christians. He examines the Holocaust, which brought the fight against antisemitism to new heights, and Zionism, which has set the fight back immeasurably. The role of media and particularly social media in spreading antisemitism is scrutinized. Identity Politics is found to have sidelined Jews in favor of other historically oppressed populations. All of which leads to a provocative conclusion: we need to quit worrying so much about antisemitism in the form of incivility, conspiracy theories, and Holocaust denial, and concentrate on expressions that are organized, institutionalized, and violent."--

Abstract: "Jewish texts and traditions. An expression of this was the remarkable turn to Bible translation. In the century and a half between Moses Mendelssohn's pioneering translation and the final one by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, German Jews produced sixteen different translations of at least the Pentateuch. Buber and Rosenzweig famously critiqued bourgeois German Judaism as a craven attempt to establish social respectability to facilitate Jews' entry into the middle class through a vapid, domesticated account of Judaism. Exploring Bible translations by Moses Mendelssohn, Leopold Zunz, and Samson Raphael Hirsch, I argue that each sought to ground a "reformation" of Judaism along bourgeois lines, which involved aligning Judaism with a Protestant concept of religion. They did so because they saw in bourgeois values the best means to serve God and the authentic actualization of Jewish tradition. Through their learned, creative Bible translations, Mendelssohn, Zunz, and Hirsch presented distinct visions of middle-class Judaism that affirmed Jewish nationhood while lighting the path to a purposeful, emotionally rich, spiritual life grounded in ethical responsibility"--

Abstract: "Emotion lies at the heart of all national movements, and Zionism is no exception. For those who identify as a Zionist, the word connotates liberation and redemption, uniqueness and vulnerability. Yet for many, Zionism is a source of distaste if not disgust, and those who reject it are no less passionate than those who embrace it. The power of such emotions helps explain why a word originally associated with territorial aspiration has survived for so many years after the establishment of the Israeli State. Zionism: An Emotional State expertly demonstrates how the energy propelling the Zionist project originates from bundles of feelings whose elements have varied in volume, intensity, and durability across space and time. Beginning with an original typology of Zionism and a new take on its relationship to colonialism, Penslar then examines the emotions that have shaped Zionist sensibilities and practices over the course of the movement's history. The resulting portrait of Zionism reconfigures how we understand Jewish Identity amidst continuing debates on the role of nationalism in the modern world"--

Abstract: "Facing the harrowing task of rebuilding a life in the wake of the Holocaust, many Jewish survivors, community and religious leaders, and Allied soldiers viewed marriage between Jewish women and military personnel as a way to move forward after unspeakable loss. Proponents believed that these unions were more than just a ticket out of war-torn Europe: they would help the Jewish people repopulate after the attempted annihilation of European Jewry. Historian Robin Judd, whose grandmother survived the Holocaust and married an American soldier after liberation, introduces us to the Jewish women who lived through genocide and went on to wed American, Canadian, and British military personnel after the war. She offers an intimate portrait of how these unions emerged and developed-from meeting and courtship to marriage and immigration to life in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom-and shows how they helped shape the postwar world by touching thousands of lives, including those of the chaplains who officiated their weddings, the Allied authorities whose policy decisions structured the couples' fates, and the bureaucrats involved in immigration and acculturation. The stories Judd tells are at once heartbreaking and restorative, and she vividly captures how the exhilaration of the brides' early romances coexisted with survivor's guilt, grief, and apprehension at the challenges of starting a new life in a new land."

Abstract: "In this eye-opening book, Peter Shambrook delves into the secret correspondence between the British High Commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry McMahon, and the Sharif of Mecca during the First World War. McMahon promised the Sharif an independent Arab state, including Palestine, after the war, in exchange for his alliance with Britain against the Ottomans. But what happened next changed the course of history. Despite the promises made, two years later Lloyd George's government declared that Palestine would be for the global Jewish community. Shambrook's meticulous analysis of official records and private papers reveals the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to this betrayal of the Arabs and exposes how successive British governments blocked the publication of the Sharif and McMahon's correspondence. Presenting compelling evidence, Shambrook debunks the myth perpetuated by Britain and pro-Zionist historians that Palestine was never part of the lands guaranteed to the Sharif. He lays bare the truth and its devastating consequences, which have reverberated throughout the decades-long conflict in the Middle East. Shockingly, no British government has launched an impartial investigation into this matter or officially acknowledged its betrayal of the Palestinian people. This definitive work is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict, revealing a hidden chapter of British deceit and shedding light on the ongoing tensions in the region."

Abstract: "For the sixty thousand German Jews who escaped Nazi Germany and found refuge in Mandate Palestine between 1933 and 1941, migration meant radical changes: it transformed their professional and cultural lives and confronted them with a new language, climate, and society. Bridging German-Jewish and Israeli history, this book tells the story of German-Jewish migration to Mandate Palestine/Eretz Israel as gender history. It argues that this migration was shaped and structured by gendered policies and ideologies and experienced by men and women in a gendered form - from the decision to immigrate and the anticipation of change, through the outcomes for family life, body, self-image, and sexuality. Immigration led to immediate transformations in allocations of tasks within the family, concepts of masculinity and femininity, and participation in the labor market and domestic life. Through a close examination of archival materials in German, English, and Hebrew, including administrative records, personal documents, newspapers, and oral history interviews conducted by the author, this book follows Jewish migrants along their journeys from Germany and into the workplaces, living rooms, and kitchens of their new homeland, providing a new perspective on everyday life in Mandate Palestine. Viola Alianov-Rautenberg's work illuminates key issues at the intersection of migration studies, German-Jewish studies, and Israeli history, demonstrating how the lens of gender enriches our understanding of social change, power, ethnicity, and nation-building"--

Abstract: "An account of the design of West Bank settlements from 1967, when housing settlements were still an abstract idea, to the present, when they have become hotly contested. It addresses the complicated relationship between politics and the built environment and questions assumptions about politics and the built environment. The author looks closely at five settlements-Hebron, Ofra, Nofim, Beitar Illit, and Pnei Kedem-to analyze the settlement movement, the country Israel has become since 1967, and, more broadly, "the production of space in sites of political conflict." For Shoked, the role of contingency is key: government policy shaped the design of settlements, but so too did other actors. As Shoked writes, "the analytic categories of expert and user, above and below, frequently dissolve in the unfolding process of design, construction, and inhabitation.""--

Abstract: "The 7 Deadly Myths traces antisemitism from its earliest origins to the present day and uncovers the dangerous conspiracy theories that have corrupted reasoning and led people and nations to diabolical acts. Exploring some of the most significant events in history and uncovering little-known villains, this book answers the questions of how antisemitism takes hold, how it is transmitted and how it inspires violence to the present day. Written in a clear and compelling style, The 7 Deadly Myths is essential to understanding why this ancient hatred continues to plague society, inspiring pop stars, athletes and demagogues alike. It is a crucial resource for policy makers, students and the reading public seeking to understand racism and how it can be stopped"--

Abstract: "From the twentieth century onward, women took on an extraordinary range of roles in intelligence, defying the conventions of their time. Across both world wars, far from being a small part of covert operations, women ran spy networks and escape lines, parachuted behind enemy lines, and interrogated prisoners. And, back in Bletchley and Whitehall, women's vital administrative work in MI offices kept the British war engine running. In this major, panoramic history, Helen Fry looks at the rich and varied work women undertook as civilians and in uniform. From spies in the Belgian network "La Dame Blanche," knitting coded messages into jumpers, to those who interpreted aerial images and even ran entire sections, Fry shows just how crucial women were in the intelligence mission. Filled with hitherto unknown stories, Women in Intelligence places new research on record for the first time and showcases the inspirational contributions of these remarkable women."--

Abstract: "Jews, Race, and the Politics of Difference explores how Russian Jewish writers and political activists such as Vladimir Jabotinsky turned to "race" as an operational concept in the late imperial politics of the Russian Empire. Building on the latest scholarship on racial thinking and Jewish identities, Marina Mogilner shows how Jewish anthropologists, ethnographers, writers, lawyers, and political activists in late imperial Russia sought to construct a Jewish identity based on racial categorization in addition to religious affiliation. By grounding nationality not in culture and territory but in blood and biology, race offered Jewish nationalists in Russia a scientifically sound and politically effective way to reaffirm their common identity. Jews, Race, and the Politics of Difference presents the works of Jabotinsky as a lens to understanding Jewish "self-racializing," and brings Jews and race together in a framework that is more multifaceted and controversial than that implied by the usual narratives of racial antisemitism"--

Abstract: Ein Panorama niedersächsisch-jüdischer Geschichte: Vom Beginn des Reformjudentums im 18. Jahrhundert.

Abstract: "To be seen" widmete sich den Geschichten von LGBTIQ* in Deutschland in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Abstract: Die Fotografin Maria Austria, eigentlich Marie Östreicher, wurde 1915 in Karlsbad geboren und kam Mitte der 1930er-Jahre zum Studium an der Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt nach Wien. The photographer Maria Austria, actually Marie Östreicher, was born in Karlovy Vary in 1915 and came to Vienna in the mid-1930s to study at the Higher Federal Institution for Graphic Education and Research. After working briefly as a press photographer, she emigrated to Amsterdam in 1937, where she founded the Studio Model en Foto Austria (Fashion and Photo Studio Austria) with her sister Lisbeth, a textile designer educated at the Bauhaus Dessau. Following the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands, she went underground and helped the resistance by making passport photos for counterfeit passports. In 1945, she established the Particam Pictures photo agency with her husband and other colleagues. As a press photographer, she documented the issues of her time, from the destruction caused by war to street photography and portraits of artists and celebrities. Her series Het Achterhuis from 1954, with photos of Anne Frank’s hiding place, still has a direct impact today. In later years she specialized in theatrical photography. A selection of her photos was already featured as part of the exhibition Vienna’s Shooting Girls – Jewish Women Photographers from Vienna in 2012 at the Jewish Museum Vienna. Now the first solo exhibition of this outstanding exponent of post-war photography, who remains largely unknown in this country, is being shown in Austria. Starting from the early works from her years in Vienna, this represents the highlights of her photographic activity from the 1930s to the mid-1970s.

Abstract: Anlässlich des 125.

Abstract: Between Anti-Fascist Society, Socialist Utopia and Lived Jewishness: What did it mean to be Jewish in the GDR? After the Shoah, many Jews made the conscious choice to live in East Germany, to be part of building a new, more equitable socialist society, hoping for greater justice and to overcome antisemitic structures. This volume looks at what became of their ideals, how Jewish life was newly constituted in small communities, and how the social upheavals affected the self-image of Jews in the GDR. With texts by Sandra Anusiewicz-Baer, Inka Bertz, Michael Brenner, Lara Dämmig, Sonia Combe, Cathy Gelbin, Olaf Glöckner, Philipp Graf, Steffen Heidrich, Wolfgang Herzberg, Stefan Heym, Barbara Honigmann, Mario Keßler, Annette Leo, Tamar Lewinsky, Martina Lüdicke, Jalda Rebling, Miriam Rürup, Lisa Schoß, Hermann Simon, Ofer Waldman, Alexander Walther and Theresia Ziehe

Abstract: Am 23.

According to the Judeo-Christian tradition, Adam and Eve introduced guilt into the world through the Fall. Furthermore, Cain’s murder of his brother Abel is regarded today as an allegory for the wrongs that people inflict on others. While the admission of guilt is a central idea in monotheistic religions, in society it is criminal law that determines guilt and innocence. After the Shoah, the question of guilt became a sociopolitical issue, one that is still relevant today. Whereas discussion revolved initially around collective and individual guilt, the question now focuses on complicity and suppressed guilt. Survivor’s guilt is a further phenomenon that was acknowledged for the first time as a result of the Shoah. The exhibition looks at the various dimensions of guilt—existential, metaphysical, moral, or political, for example. Historical objects and selected works of art accompany visitors as they confront this multi-layered topic.

Abstract: Im Februar 2023 jährte sich der Geburtstag von Bertolt Brecht (10. Februar 1898 – 14. August 1956) zum 125sten Mal. Im November vor ebenfalls 125 Jahren wurde die Malerin Lotte Laserstein (28. November 1898 – 21. Januar 1993) geboren.
