Kurzfassung:
The identity of ancient Judaism witnessed by the Hebrew Bible is signified by a symbolic device structured by various signs of lack. Circumcision inscribes it in the flesh of men (Gen 17), the Sabbath rest in the organization of time (Ex 31,13-17), the Temple in the arrangement of space (Num 1-2), the tribe of Levi in the whole people (Num 3,11-13) and the rules of food in daily life (Lev 11). Essential in the Torah, this coherent system of identity markers will not survive in early Christianity as witnessed by the canonical writings of the New Testament.
