Abstract:
An opening lecture delivered in November 2002 in Frankfurt am Main at the conference "Jüdisches Alltagsleben im Lichte neuer archäologischer Funde". Surveys Jewish life in Germany in the Middle Ages. Describes the increasing segregation of Jews in the German-speaking realm due to decrees of the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), municipal regulations, and popular prejudices (e.g. superstitions and fear of the other). This process was gradual, and the various regulations were often disregarded by both parties. Relates to recent archaeological research in Germany, and queries what information about topography can provide on relations between Christians and Jews at the time.
