Abstract: The tension between the \'book\' and the \'body\' has in recent years attracted the attention of scholars interested in the perception of the body in Judaism and the impact of religious law and performance on the body. The fifteen contributions in this volume deal with perceptions of the \'Jewish body\' in a broad range of legal, poetic, mystical, philosophical and polemical early modern Jewish sources. The first part of the book examines the construction of the body in specific historical and social contexts. Part two discusses normative texts and the notion of an \'ideal Jewish body.\' Part three explores body, mind and soul in Jewish philosophy and mysticism. The last section of the book discusses body issues in Jewish-Christian discourse. The volume includes contributions by Howard Tzvi Adelman, Ruth Berger, Saverio Campanini, Maria Diemling, Eleazar Gutwirth, Don Harrán, Moshe Idel, Sergius Kodera, Arthur M. Lesley, Gianfranco Miletto, Giuseppe Veltri, Roni Weinstein, Elliot R. Wolfson, Jeffrey R. Woolf and Nimrod Zinger

Abstract: This volume brings together nineteen studies by foremost experts in the period of Herod and Augustus, and highlights recent progress in elucidating the phenomenon of Herod the Great in the context of the Roman imperial order inaugurated by Augustus. They illuminate Herod’s pre-eminent role in the Augustan client network and his remarkable energies, expressed in an extensive building programme which has left substantial remains. The literary records of Herod’s life and times, primarily by Josephus, are critically examined here in relation to the documentary and archaeological evidence

Abstract: This inventory provides a survey of the extant Yiddish sources in Dutch archives and collections outside of Amsterdam. Until now, an overview and quantitative summary of the available Yiddish sources in The Netherlands was lacking. The compilation represents only a modest beginning, for the amount of material that has survived is enormous. An inventory relating to the Jewish community of Amsterdam requires a separate volume. The present inventory aims to stimulate new research-projects on the history of Ashkenazi Jewry in the Netherlands and to facilitate the research of the west-Yiddish speech variant that was spoken by the Ashkenazi Jews in The Netherlands

Abstract: From Iraq to Spain, from Germany to Cataluña, from Italy to Yemen, poetry has been for centuries a privileged mode of expression in the Jewish world. Sometimes borrowing from the poetry of the land in which they lived, but always reinventing it in relationship to the Hebrew language and to the Jewish cultural references, the \'medieval\' Hebrew poets created an immense, variegated and fascinating corpus. In this book, some of the best specialist of the field analyse different themes and authors of this tradition, providing new insights to well-known authors or proposing less celebrated works as equally worthy of study. As a result of this scholarship, the English reader will be able to penetrate the different social and historical contexts of significant portions of Medieval Hebrew poetry as well as the cultural implications of technical choices apparently neutral

Abstract: Metempsychosis was a prominent element in Renaissance conceptualizations of the human being, the universe, and the place of the human person in the universe. A variety of concepts emerged in debates about metempsychosis: human to human reincarnation, human to vegetal, human to animal, and human to angelic transmigration. As a complex and changing doctrine, metempsychosis gives us a well-placed window for viewing the complex and dynamic contours of Jewish thought in late fifteenth century Italy; as such, it enables us to evaluate Jewish thought in relation to non-Jewish Italian developments. This book addresses the problematic question of the roles and achievements of Jews who lived in Italy in the development of Renaissance culture in its Jewish and its Christian dimensions

Band 16 verzeichnet z. B. Otto Liebmann, Jakob Löwenberg, Samuel Lublinski, Georg Lukács, Ludwig Marcuse, Walter Mehring.
Abstract: The Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren covers the Jewish contribution to German-speaking cultural history in some 1,300 biographical-bibliographic articles. Besides authors of literature in the broadest sense, representatives of the humanities can be found and other individuals from public life who, through their work, were influential beyond their specialist field. The biographical part includes information on the authors and documents political and Zionist involvement, circles of friends, and attitude towards Judaism, with autobiographical quotations wherever possible. Each biography is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary literature in which the works are critically analysed and annotated, as far as possible or relevant. Quotations by the author, content of writings and/or excerpts from reviews are provided to further facilitate research.

Abstract: Translations of Hebrew and Aramaic sacred texts into Jewish languages, religiolects, and varieties have been widespread throughout the Jewish world. This volume is a study of the genre of these translations, known as the šarḥ, into Judeo-Arabic in Egypt in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The study places Judeo-Arabic along the Jewish linguistic spectrum, traces its history and offers insights to the spoken variety of Egyptian Judeo-Arabic, which set it apart from other Arabic dialects. The book also provides a linguistic model of the translation of the sacred texts. Rather than viewing the translation as only verbatim, the study traces in great detail the literal/interpretive linguistic tension with which the translators struggled in their work

Abstract: The history of Iranian Jews after the establishment of the Safavid State in Iran in 1501 C.E. has formed the subject of growing academic and broader interest over the last few decades. However, despite the significant increase in the quantity and quality of the publications in this area, some of the main aspects and periods in the history of Iranian Jews have received little or no systematic treatment. Dealing with some broad but closely related areas of history, community, society, and culture among the Jews of nineteenth-century Iran, the present book provides sources of information as well as discussions and explanations related to some of the main conditions and realities that shaped the lives of the Iranian Jews prior to their accelerated transformation in the course of the twentieth-century. Included among the eight sections and over forty annotated and analyzed sources in the book are those that shed light on some of the major areas of Jewish life in nineteenth-century Iran. Abstract: Composed in Hebrew in Capua, Italy in 1054, the family chronicle of Ahima'az remains one of the most important historical sources of medieval Jewish life, folklore, culture, and mentalités in Western Europe, especially in the so-called Ashkenazi area. As such, it provides a rich resource to scholars of medieval history, cultural studies, gender studies, and anthropology. In this book Robert Bonfil provides a detailed historical introduction and new English translation of the chronicle. Readers knowledgeable in Hebrew will also greatly benefit from the new, vocalized critical edition of the Hebrew text, skillfully set up in front of the translation

Abstract: While a frequently used term, Jewish Theatre has become a contested concept that defies precise definition. Is it theatre by Jews? For Jews? About Jews? Though there are no easy answers for these questions, Jewish Theatre: A Global View , contributes greatly to the conversation by offering an impressive collection of original essays written by an international cadre of noted scholars from Europe, the United States, and Israel. The essays discuss historical and current texts and performance practices, covering a wide gamut of genres and traditions

Abstract: The goal of the present volume is to shed light on a number of traditions of Maimonideanism that have hitherto little been explored. Maimonides (1138 – 1204) was the most important medieval Jewish philosopher and also made lasting contributions to many other fields. The essays in the first part examine aspects of his work in medicine, Jewish law, and liturgy. The essays in the second part look at how Maimonides was read, misread, and creatively reinvented in a wide range of contexts in the East and in the West—from medieval Cairo to Crown Heights in Brooklyn. Written by a group of leading scholars, the essays illustrate the breadth of Maimonides' work and the fascinating history of its reception from the 13th century to the present

Abstract: During World War II it appeared that American workers in uniform had all that was required to defend democracy on the battlefields yet, on the domestic front, the working class, as it turned out, was ideologically inconsistent when it came to democracy. Could battles against tyranny be won abroad only to lose the war back home? This was the question the Institute of Social Research (the famous “Frankfurt School”) asked in 1944 when it embarked upon an important study of the American working class. Dialectic of Solidarity draws upon unpublished research reports of the Frankfurt School and represents a unique and multidimensional view of the political imagination of the wartime American worker and the role of antisemitism as the 'spearhead of fascism.'

Abstract: This book offers a fresh understanding of how Isaiah was translated into Greek, by considering the impact of the translator's Alexandrian milieu on his work. Whereas most studies over the past fifty years have regarded the book's free translation style as betraying the translator's conviction that Isaiah's oracles were being fulfilled in his day, this study argues that he was primarily interested in offering his Greek-speaking co-religionists a cohesive representation of Isaiah's ideas. Comparison of the translator's interpretative tacks with those employed by the grammatikoi in their study of Homer offers a convincing picture of his work as an Alexandrian Jew and clarifies how this translation should be assessed in reconstructing early textual forms of Hebrew Isaiah

Abstract: This volume examines twelve ancient and medieval manuscripts, ten from the caves at Qumran and the two so called Damascus Documents from the Cairo Geniza, presenting a new organization and understanding of these texts. The twelve manuscripts are in a composite form under the title Midrash haTorah haAcharon (MTA), the Midrash of the Eschatological Torah, a title which opens a new window into the understanding of the Jewish literary tradition during the period of the Second Temple, prior to the development of the Talmud and Christianity. Following the composite Hebrew text are a full translation, notes and commentary elucidating the MTA in light of the new evidence provided by these texts and retranslation
Note: Includes the text of a document reconstructed from manuscripts found in the Cairo Genizah and from fragments of the Dead Sea scrolls and given the presumed title "Midrash on the eschatological Torah," taken from the final words of the text. - Includes bibliographical references (p. Abstract: The book deals with leisure, pleasure and healing at the thermo-mineral sites in the Levant since the biblical era throughout the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and early Muslim periods. It looks closely at the question of whether the spas, which are models for social interaction between pagans, Christians and Jews, served as sacred cult places or popular sites of healing. The main objectives of the book are as follows: • Clarifying the leisure-time activities at the spas based on Classical and Rabbinic literature, pilgrims’ travel-books, Syriac and Arabic texts, the Geniza fragments, cartographic evidence, and archaeological findings. • Lightening the daily life, healing cults, medical recommendations and treatments. • Examining the social history of medicine at the curative baths

Abstract: This book examines four texts: 1 Enoch, 4QInstruction, Matthew and 2 Enoch. A common idea in these texts, which blend sapiential and apocalyptic elements, is that the revealing of wisdom to an elect group inaugurates the eschatological period. The emphasis on “revealed wisdom” is essentially apocalyptic, but facilitates the uptake of motifs, forms and language from the sapiential tradition and is important in explaining the fusion of the two traditions. In addition, revealed wisdom often has creational associations and this has significance for the notion of ethics in these texts. The book will interest anyone concerned with the development of Jewish and Christian eschatology and ethics. It also challenges the simplistic redactional assumptions of certain New Testament scholars

Abstract: Elias J. Bickerman, who passed away a quarter of a century ago, was one of the twentieth century's great historians of the ancient world. His innovative genius and breathtaking erudition are evident in his writings, many of which are now considered classics. Bickerman's contributions to the history of ancient Judaism and early Christianity remain particularly significant but his three volume collection, Studies in Jewish and Christian History , has been out of print for some time. Thus, the publication of this new edition of Studies, now entirely in English, along with Bickerman's most famous book, The God of the Maccabees , is designed to bring Bickerman's central studies on ancient Judaism and early Christianity to a new generation of students and scholars

Abstract: Almost all scholars have viewed the book of Jubilees as the work of a single author, applying to the book methods of analysis determined primarily by its literary genre, Rewritten Bible. This study suggests a new approach, in light of numerous contradictions between the rewritten stories on the one hand, and the juxtaposed legal passages and chronological framework on the other. It is suggested here that the editor of Jubilees adopted extant reworked sources, and added his own legal and chronological framework. This proposed literary-critical method is highly significant for the study of the book’s worldview, as is demonstrated by the analysis of passages in Jubilees that relate to the origins of evil and of law in the world

Abstract: The present volume contains essays dealing with the Second Temple Jewish traditions and documents preserved solely in their Slavonic translations. It examines these Slavonic pseudepigraphical materials in the context of their mediating role in the development of early Jewish mystical traditions from Second Temple apocalypticism to Merkabah mysticism attested in rabbinic and Hekhalot materials. The book represents the first attempt to study Slavonic pseudepigrapha collectively as a unique group of texts that share common theophanic and mediatorial imagery crucial for the development of early Jewish mysticism. The study demonstrates that mediatorial traditions of the exalted patriarchs and prophets played an important role in facilitating the transition from apocalypticism to early Jewish mysticism

Abstract: For the majority of scholars, the Animal Apocalypse is a militant text, a piece of pro-Maccabean propaganda. This text, however, develops theological reflections that are distinctly different from a justification of an armed struggle. Its themes are even incompatible with the Maccabean movement. It is impossible to condemn the Second Temple and, at the same time, mobilise people for a fight in order to purify that very Temple. After dealing with text-critical issues, this work challenges the thesis that the text is military propaganda through the use of narrative and historical approaches. The analyses, besides proposing a new way of a studying an apocalypse, spell out the peculiarity and the significance of the theology of the Animal Apocalypse in connection with the biblical history of Israel and the theology of the Qumran community

Abstract: This study deals with physiognomic and astrological texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls that represent one of the earliest examples of ancient Jewish science. For the first time the Hebrew physiognomic-astrological list 4Q186 (4QZodiacal Physiognomy) and the Aramaic physiognomic list 4Q561 (4QPhysiognomy ar) are comprehensively studied in relation to both physiognomic and astrological writings from Babylonian and Greco-Roman traditions. New reconstructions and interpretations of these learned lists are offered that result in a fresh view of their sense, function, and status within both the Qumran community and Second Temple Judaism at large, showing that Jewish culture in Palestine participated in the cultural exchange of learned knowledge between Babylonian and Greco-Roman cultures

Abstract: In recent years there has been a lively debate about the early Enoch literature and its place in Judaism. This volume is intended to represent that debate, by juxtaposing pairs of articles on several key issues: the textual evidence, the relationship to the Torah, the calendar, the relation to wisdom, the relation to the temple, the sociological setting and the relation to the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is not the intention of the editors to impose a consensus, but rather to stimulate discussion by bringing together divergent viewpoints. The book should be a useful textbook not only on the Enoch literature and apocalypticism, but more generally on Second Temple Judaism
Note: "At the Venice meeting in 2003, a group of participants ... decided to plan an additional collection of essays on 'The Early Enoch Literature.' The intent was to summarize and intensify the results of the first two Enoch Seminars. - Includes bibliographical references and index

Abstract: This volume discusses links between the exegetical trends current in various Second Temple Jewish circles and patterns of New Testament conversation with Jewish Scripture. The standard focus on Jewish background of Christianity is complemented here by an alternative direction: the “mapping” of New Testament evidence as the early witness to more general trends attested in their fully developed form only later, in rabbinic literature. The question that dominates much of the discussion is: How can the New Testament be used for creating a fuller picture of Second Temple Jewish exegesis? The book deals with a representative variety of samples from different layers of the New Testament tradition: Synoptic Gospels, Pauline Epistles and Acts

Abstract: The study examines Jewish and judaeophobic language concepts and conflicts between 1893 and 1933. The author is primarily concerned with reconstructing German Jews’ attitudes to the German language. The sources used include public debates on the assessment of language as they were conducted in prominent Jewish journals around 1900. Conversely, Kremer also examines the specific linguistic, cultural and racial polemics of the contemporary agitation directed against the Jews. His discreetly and tactfully written study contributes to the process of reappraising German-Jewish relations in attitudes to the German language.

Abstract: This is a study of one of the few prose texts by an author much better known for his poetry. It is inspired by Celan's remark that »Gespräch im Gebirg« was written "in memory of an encounter that never happened." Instead of taking the conventional course and treating this remark as a reference to Adorno, the author examines the poetological implications behind it. Though hermetic at first glance, the text yields up a surprising number of its apparent enigmas when subjected to close reading, poetological analysis, intertextual comparison with texts by Adorno, and reference to letters recently published for the first time.
Abstract: Review text: "S[iebert]'s insistance on the primacy of the text, and the reading of it [...], provides an eloquent and convincing case against purely autobiographically informed literary investigation. The volume concludes with some provocative suggestions for further research."In: The year's work in modern language studies 69/2009 "Die Studie wird künftig als Standardwerk zu Celans wichtigstem Erzähltext gelten dürfen."Wolfgang Emmerich in: Germanistik, Band 48/Heft 3-4 (2007)

Abstract: Dieser Band besteht aus 14 Beiträgen.
Abstract: This volume is comprised of 14 contributions, which are revised and expanded versions of lectures held at an international conference on Stefan Zweig that took place in Israel in 2004. The essays focus on Zweig's biographical writings (for example Erasmus and Fouché), as well as on several aspects of his literary works that have been neglected since the revival of academic studies of his writings and career commenced some 25 years ago. These include: Zweig's conception of the daemonic, Zweig and Christianity, the discourse of love in his writings, Zweig as an Austrian eulogist, his understanding of theater, etc. Contributors from Austria, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, and Israel bring refreshingly diverse perspectives and new concerns to this scholarly project.
Abstract: Review text: "This collection makes a strong contribution to lying out categories for continuing to apprehend and appreciate the still-elusive Zweig."Vincent Kling in: German Studies Review 2/2009

Abstract: The rediscovery of the works of the Galician writer Soma Morgenstern only took place after his death. They are marked by the quest for identity embarked on by Jewish intellectuals in the 20th century. Exiled in America after the Shoah, Morgenstern turned away from Christian Europe, attributing to it the religious blame for the Holocaust. "Die Blutsäule" is, however, written in idiosyncratic German, with many reminiscences of the language of the Bible. Given that this was also the language of the 'hated' perpetrators of the Holocaust, the complexion of the novel is intricate indeed. The study reconstructs its religious, historical, and literary background.
- The rediscovery of the works of the Galician writer Soma Morgenstern only took place after his death. Abstract: Der Band enthält die Briefe des österreichischen Romanisten Leo Spitzer (1887-1960) an den Romanisten und Sprachwissenschaftler Hugo Schuchardt (1842-1927).

Abstract: The 19th century German-Jewish historical novel was born of the need to supply readers with popular novels, a novelty in Jewish literature. Through the back door it provided a chance to update images of Jews and Judaism and rewrite Jewish history according to the ideological needs of the main participants in the struggle out of the Ghetto. Rabbis, teachers and community leaders wrote novels that first appeared in the main papers, the "AZJ" and "Der Israelit". The novels enjoyed great popularity, especially among youth. Though they rejected any national aspect of Jewish history, the very choice of themes and heroes enhanced national pride. They were translated/adapted into Hebrew and played a major role in the national awakening in Eastern Europe and in Israel.

Abstract: In response to the onset of 'modernism' around 1900 we find in Vienna the emergence of the image of that city as the epitome of Gemütlichkeit and coziness. With its programmatic reference to the past (Alt-Wien) this image was the ideal counterpoint to the alarming social and cultural upheavals ravaging the metropolis at that point in time. This image was primarily disseminated and differentiated by popular musical theatre, notably its most important genre, the operetta. The present essay on the topography of popular musical theatre in Vienna points up the connections between theatrical entertainment and the urban setting.
Abstract: Review text: "Daß die Geschichte des Wiener Unterhaltungstheaters nicht ohne die Berücksichtigung jüdischer Protagonisten geschrieben werden kann, beweist diese Studie eindrücklich."Daniel Jütte in: PaRDeS 13/2007 "...this outstanding addition to the distinguished 'Theatron' series is the most innovative contribution to Viennese theatre history to have appeared in print for half a century." Abstract: After 1933, on a scale hitherto largely unreflected in literary research, German exiles engaged with the phenomenon of National Socialist anti-Semitism. This engagement ranged from the collection of documents to the 'dialectics of enlightenment'. The study reconstructs this historical discourse with special reference to the way it is reflected in the Zeitstück genre (topical dramas on pressing contemporary issues). In the process it inquires into the extent to which the dramatic genre imposes formal aesthetic constraints that involve a restriction of theoretical interest in anti-Semitism to a small number of constantly recurring motifs.

Abstract: In the eight decades after the 1830s, ghetto literature became the most important genre in the development of Jewish literature in German. In its first section, this documentation outlines the reception accorded to the genre up to the early 1930s with reference to and commentaries on over 600 sources. The second section facilitates access to the primary texts by providing an annotated bibliography, brief biographies of the just under 100 mostly Jewish authors of ghetto literature, and indexes of names and subject matter.
Abstract: Seit den dreißiger Jahren des 19.

Abstract: Leopold Jessner (1878-1945) was the first German director to display an explicit commitment to political theatre. As of 1919 he was in charge of the biggest theatre in the Weimar Republic, the Staatstheater Berlin. The Jewish socialist put paid to the Wilhelmine artistic spirit prevalent at the time and gave the democratic epoch a new profile. Among conservatives this aroused greater enmity than they felt for many of the politicians taking a similar stance. Jessner's specific use of the stage and his terse, objective style of direction initiated the development of German Regietheater even before the arrival of Piscator and Brecht. Jessner's work also reflects the division of the Republic. His resignation in 1930 was a symptomatic case of the ousting of Jews from German cultural life.

Abstract: Dieser Band beschäftigt sich mit der jüdischen Identität der österreichischen Dichter und Denker Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Karl Kraus und Theodor Herzl im Kulturkontext und in der Kulturkrise des österreichischen Fin de Siècle.
Abstract: This volume examines the Jewish identity of the Austrian writers and thinkers Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Richard Beer-Hofmann, Karl Kraus, and Theodor Herzl in the cultural context of the Austrian fin de siècle and the cultural crisis that went with it. All of them drew more or less consciously on a rich Jewish heritage, which they either turned away from (Kraus, Zweig) or sought a new rapprochement with (Beer-Hofmann, Herzl). The dynamic tensions resulting from the interplay between the absorption of Austrian culture, on the one hand, and the imprint of century-old Jewish traditions and values on the other find their expression in the different responses of these Austrian-Jewish personalities to the culture and cultural crisis of the fin de siècle. As such they can be considered paradigmatic for the situation of all European Jews.

Abstract: This volume contains an edition of three important historical narratives by Salomon Kohn (1825-1904), a comprehensive bibliography and a thorough study, in which Kohn's work is located in the context of German-Jewish literary and cultural history of the 19th century. The volume thus represents the first ever scholarly engagement with an author who must be regarded as the founder of German-Jewish historical fiction and who belonged to the most popular writers of his time.

Jahrhundert.
Abstract: The language used in the Yiddish Bible translation tradition is extremely well documented both by manuscripts (as of about 1400) and by printed versions (as of about 1535). In the real-life context, its most salient usage is located in the cheyder, the Jewish elementary school. The contribution of this translation idiom to the development of standard Yiddish has been hugely underrated. The present study (a) draws upon the first Hebrew-Yiddish Bible concordance (around 1535) to identify as many elements of cheyder language as possible that ran counter to the development of standard German, (b) explains them with reference to the original Hebrew text, (c) traces their presence in Bible glossaries and translations to establish them as consistent elements in the tradition, and (d) documents their incorporation into ordinary Yiddish all the way up to standard Yiddish. The study is based on the evaluation of some 120 texts from the late 14th to the 18th century.
