Abstract:
Surveys interest in Jewish history among East German scholars, in literature, and in the mass media. After 1945, persecution of the Jews was perceived mainly as fascist oppression. Even in the 1940s, however, studies on antisemitism were published by two scholars of Jewish origin, Siegbert Kahn and Stefan Heymann, a number of Holocaust memoirs were published, and several popular films and many literary works were produced, especially by Jewish authors. More studies and collections of documents dealing with the Holocaust appeared from the 1960s on, along with symposia, memorial programs, exhibitions, and the restoration and care of memorial sites and cemeteries, often linked to the anniversaries of "Kristallnacht" (in 1978, and especially in 1988). School curricula contain only brief treatment of the Holocaust. However, little work has been done in studying German antisemitism in general or the Jews' contributions to German society.
