Abstract:
A guest lecture delivered in Israel by the director of the Institute of Eurasian Studies at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. States that there were antisemitic activities in Harbin and Shanghai during the 1920s-40s, but they were carried out by Japanese, White Russians, and fascist Germans. Presents reasons why a spontaneous Chinese antisemitism never developed: deep religious prejudice does not exist in the Chinese religions (Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism), as opposed to European Christianity; Chinese rulers always upheld a policy of unification of Chinese and foreigners, so long as the latter did not become involved in politics (the Jews in China engaged in culture and trade); the Chinese and Jewish cultures have much in common (e.g. loyalty to the ruling power, family ties, the importance of education, and a talent for survival under extremely difficult conditions); both peoples suffered greatly under fascism. Although China supported Zionism's goals at first, from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s it adopted an anti-Zionist stance, mainly due to Soviet influence. Since 1983 there has been a welcome move towards normalization of relations between China and Israel.
