Abstract:
Explores the response of the American Jewish community to the Nazi persecution of Jews by studying the reactions of Providence Jews to prewar events reported by the local newspaper, the "Jewish Herald." From 1935 to 1939, the focus of the community's actions shifted from attempts to affect the Nazi regime (e.g. with a boycott) to concern for the refugees from Germany. Providence Jews failed to conduct a concerted action: the participation in the boycott was only partial, and the Jews of Providence did not try to influence the U.S. government to change its immigration policy. Among the reasons for their inaction were difficult economic conditions in the post-Depression years and belief that the conditions in Germany would improve, but the chief reason was the belief that the U.S. government would take some action on behalf of the refugees.
