Abstract:
Chronicles the activities of a robber band headed by Johannes Bückler, known as Schinderhannes, which terrorized village Jews in and around the district of Birkenfeld in the Rhineland (then under French rule) from 1797-1802. 110 Jews are recorded as victims; of these, four were murdered and many more were mishandled and injured; there were probably additional victims who were too intimidated to report to the authorities. The robbers assaulted Jews both on the roads and in their homes, and extorted protection money. Non-Jewish neighbors refused to aid the Jews or to testify against the robbers in court. Some took part in the raids, sheltered the robbers, or received stolen property. Schinderhannes took advantage of the resentment of the populace which felt exploited by the Jews. He was romanticized as a kind of Robin Hood who took the Jews' ill-gotten gains and also defied the hated French occupiers, who had declared Jews equal with Christians. After Schinderhannes and his men were arrested in 1802, another band took their place.
