Abstract:
Discusses the limits of Martin Luther's humanism, and Luther's last diatribe against the Jews, "Vermahnung wider die Juden" (1546). States that Luther's anti-Jewish stance and prejudices (e.g. blood libel accusations) led to the theological delegitimation of Judaism and, embedded into the catechism, consolidated the public's antisemitic feelings. Outlines the contribution of Justus Jonas (in German, Jodocus Koch, 1493-1555), who translated Luther's writings into Latin, helping thus to spread the anti-Jewish message.
