Abstract:
Examines the relationship between Jews and Poles, and between Poles and the Holocaust, based mainly on debates in the press and opinion polls carried out in 1985-2000. The debates dealt with moral issues and the question of the responsibility of Polish society for the Holocaust. The positions of Jan Błoński and Władysław Siła-Nowicki represent two extremes in Polish society. One calls for the confession of persecution of the Jews; the other encourages the persistence of antisemitic manifestations. The polls relating to attitudes toward the Jewish question show a slow decrease in antisemitism and a gradual growth in knowledge of Judaism. Opposes the hypothesis that Polish antisemitism has Catholic roots; the polls show economic-political issues as the primary factor in antisemitism.
