Abstract:
Discusses the prolific production of Jewish autobiographies in Italy since the mid-1980s. Examines ca. ten memoirs which deal with the fascist era. They reveal Jewish familiarity with fascism; over 200 Jews participated in the March on Rome in 1922, and many were party members. A judeo-fascist journal was established in 1934. But Jews were also active in the anti-fascist movement; the anti-fascist elite even included traditional Jews. The Racial Laws of 1938 led to political maturation in many cases, though some fascist extremists persisted in their loyalty to the regime. The memoirs reflect joy over the fall of fascism in 1943 and confrontation with the "hundred times worse" Nazi oppression. They discuss the place of the Jews in Italian society and the reasons for the fascist tragedy. Reclaiming of Jewish identity and the creation of a link between generations are mentioned as further reasons for the writing of autobiographies.
