Abstract:
The problem of antisemitism, specifically the view of the Jews as Christ-killers, is central to Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ". The claim that the film is true to the Gospels highlights the issue. Carroll, who did not see the film, stresses that the problem is with the Gospels themselves as post-factum human accounts of the life and death of Jesus, which tend to cast blame on the Jews and exonerate the Romans (e.g. Pontius Pilate) due to religious and political considerations that came to the fore decades or more after Jesus' crucifixion. Stresses the role of Vatican II (Nostra Aetate) in helping Christians understand how to read the Gospels in a way that will prevent further persecution of the Jews. Hopes that the film will not lead to renewed Christian antisemitism. Calls for teaching and learning that will end the perverse tradition.
