Abstract: "From the late nineteenth century through the post-Holocaust era, the world was divided between countries that tried to expel their Jewish populations and those that refused to let them in. The plight of these traumatized refugees inspired numerous proposals for Jewish states. Jews and Christians, authors and adventurers, politicians and playwrights, and rabbis and revolutionaries all worked to carve out autonomous Jewish territories in remote and often hostile locations across the globe. The would-be founding fathers of these imaginary Zions dispatched scientific expeditions to far-flung regions and filed reports on the dream states they planned to create. But only Israel emerged from dream to reality. Israel's successful foundation has long obscured the fact that eminent Jewish figures, including Zionism's prophet, Theodor Herzl, seriously considered establishing enclaves beyond the Middle East. In the Shadow of Zion brings to life the amazing true stories of six exotic visions of a Jewish national home outside of the biblical land of Israel. It is the only book to detail the connections between these schemes, which in turn explain the trajectory of modern Zionism. A gripping narrative drawn from archives the world over, In the Shadow of Zion recovers the mostly forgotten history of the Jewish territorialist movement, and the stories of the fascinating but now obscure figures who championed it. Provocative, thoroughly researched, and written to appeal to a broad audience, In the Shadow of Zion offers a timely perspective on Jewish power and powerlessness"--

Abstract: In Traditional Society in Transition: The Yemeni Jewish Experience Bat-Zion Eraqi Klorman offers an account of the unique circumstances of Yemeni Jewish existence in the wake of major changes since the second half of the nineteenth century. It follows this community's transition from a traditional patriarchal society to a group adjusting to the challenges of a modern society. Unlike the perception of the Yemeni Jews as receptive to modernity only following immigration to Palestine and Israel, Eraqi Klorman convincingly shows that some modern ideas played a role in their lives while in Yemen. Once in Palestine, they appear here as adjusting to the new conditions by striving to participate in the Zionist enterprise, consenting to secular education, transforming family practices and the status of women. “The book is an important contribution to the study of Yemeni Jews in Yemen and abroad as well as for Jewish-Muslim relations, relations between Yemeni Jews and other Jews, and gender studies...Many of these issues have not been previously studied, and the use of private archives and interviews greatly increases the value of this study.\' -Rachel Simon, Princeton University.
Abstract: Main description: During the first half of the 19th century, traditional Jewish conceptions of the Messiah underwent a profound reinterpretation. In place of the vision of a Davidic messianic king, restored kingdom, and rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, new ideas arose about an ideal world governed by peace and social justice. On the basis of messianic texts by, among others, Samuel Holdheim, Salomon Ludwig Steinheim, Samuel Hirsch, Levi Herzfeld, and Salomon Formstecher, George Kohler demonstrates that this new reading of Jewish messianism for modern times did not originate from the works of the philosopher Hermann Cohen (1842–1918), but instead, had already arisen during the 1840s.

Abstract: This book aims to open up the discussion and research of the up to now unstudied period of the History of the Hebrew Bible text: the period from the apparent stabilization of the Hebrew biblical text until the standardization that is reflected in the manuscripts of biblical text, those including the Masorah (c. 2nd - 9th centuries A.D.). What took place from the time of the standardization of the consonantic text of the Hebrew Bible until the appearance of the first Masoretic codices? How was the biblical text preserved in the meantime? What was the body of notes that makes up the Masorah formed? How can the diversity of the textual traditions contained in the Masorah be explained and be consistent with the idea of a text established and standardized centuries before?

Abstract: This book explores the phenomenon of the Third Reich from a philosophical perspective. It concentrates on how Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism are conceived by eight German thinkers from the Continental tradition, exposing and then exploring the tension between ideology and philosophy, between submission to authority and genuine critical thinking, which constitute the essence of the Continental philosophical tradition. Abstract: The majority of our evidence for language change in pre-modern times comes from the written output of scribes. The present volume deals with a variety of aspects of language change and focuses on the role of scribes. The individual articles, which treat different theoretical and empirical issues, reflect a broad cross-linguistic and cross-cultural diversity. The languages that are represented cover a broad spectrum, and the empirical data come from a wide range of sources. This book provides a wealth of new data and new perspectives on old problems, and it raises new questions about the actual

Abstract: The Prussian State Library and the Reichstauschstelle (Reich Exchange Office) were at the heart of a network responsible for reallocating vast quantities of printed works confiscated from ‘enemies of the Reich’ and persecuted Jews to academic libraries and other institutions in the Third Reich. With a foreword by historians Hans Erich Bödeker and Gerd-J. Bötte and a preface by Barbara Schneider-Kempf. Cornelia Briel, Staatbibliothek Berlin.

Abstract: The alphabetic script is part of the lasting heritage of the ancient Near East. It unites a number of newly-emerging civilizations in ancient Syria-Palestine, which together constitute the immediate background of the Hebrew Bible. Transformed by the impact of Hellenism, they also shaped the social-historical and cultural setting of the New Testament. This work presents fresh and concise yet thorough overviews of the relevant languages and their interaction. They are informed by the most recent scholarship and share a clear historical framework

Abstract: The function of the participle within the Hebrew tense system has considerably changed between biblical and postbiblical Hebrew. This investigation studies the participle in the Hebrew manuscripts from the Judaean Desert, its formation, its usage, and its meaning, compared with those in other Hebrew traditions and dialects, especially the language of the Hebrew Bible. The biblical Hebrew tense system continues to be used in the Scrolls, while there is a clear difference between the tense system of the Scrolls and that of mishnaic Hebrew. This fact allows us to draw conclusions in the field of language studies; but it also provides us with a piece of the puzzle in our understanding of the sociology and religion of the Qumran community.

Abstract: To mark the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death, one thematic focus of the Yearbook deals with the life, work and legacy of this musician of Jewish extraction in the context of culture and social politics. Another thematic focus here is early research on the Holocaust, an area of inquiry whose image in recent years has fundamentally changed. These focal areas are expanded by papers dealing with questions of political history, legal history, cultural restitution and the critique of post-modern philosophy. The regular sections of the Yearbook feature articles on Günther Anders, Shmuel Yosef Agnon and Lea Goldberg, the language question in Simon Dubnow’s thinking, and the participation of Jewish anarchists in the Munich Soviet Republic (Räterepublik) of 1919.

    Keywords: Electronic books
Abstract: The notion of 'self' and 'other' and its representation in artwork and literature is an important theme in current cultural sciences as well as in our everyday life in contemporary Western societies. Moreover, the concept of 'self' and 'other' and its imaginary dichotomy is gaining more and more political impact in a world of resurfacing ideology-ridden conflicts. The essays deal with Jewish reality in contemporary Germany and its reflection in movies from the special point of view of cultural sciences, political sciences, and religious studies. This anthology presents challengingly new insights into topics rarely covered, such as youth culture or humor, and finally discusses the images of Jewish life as realities still to be constructed. Abstract: The study discusses the history of the Jewish refugees within the Shanghai setting and its relationship to the two established Jewish communities, the Sephardi and Russian Jews. Attention is also focused on the cultural life of the refugees who used both German and Yiddish, and on their attempts to cope under Japanese occupation after the outbreak of the Pacific War. Differences of identity existed between Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews, religious and secular, aside from linguistic and cultural differences. The study aims to understand the exile condition of the refugees and their amazing efforts to create a semblance of cultural life in a strange new world..

Abstract: Spanning ten years and two continents, and set in the colorful world of the Yiddish theater at the close of the nineteenth century, Wandering Stars is an epic love story by the creator of Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof. When a traveling Yiddish acting company arrives in the Russian shtetl of Holeneshti, Reizel, daughter of a poor cantor, and Leibel, son of a rich man, fall under its spell. Together they run away to become entertainers themselves, and then tour separately around Europe, ultimately reuniting in New York. Suffused with the whimsy and wistfulness that are the hallmarks of the Yiddish humorist Sholem Aleichem, Wandering Stars is an engrossing romance, a great New York story, and an anthem for the magic of the theater

Abstract: This monument of rabbinical exegesis written at the end of the twelfth century has exerted an immense and continuing influence upon Jewish thought. Its aim is to liberate people from the tormenting perplexities arising from their understanding of the Bible according only to its literal meaning. This edition contains extensive introductions by Shlomo Pines and Leo Strauss, a leading authority on Maimonides
